Mount Royal Becomes Full Canada West Member

Mount Royal becomes full Canada West member

FRASER VALLEY, B.C. â€" At the Annual General Meeting for Canada West in Harrison Hot Springs, B.C. on Tuesday, Mount Royal University and the University of Northern British Columbia were both granted full conference membership status.

This almost completes the journey for both institutions that were first granted membership in 2011.

Calgary-based Mount Royal, along with UNBC in Prince George, become the 15th and 16th full-time Canada West member institutions. MacEwan University began a three-year probationary period last May as the league's 17th member.

"We are proud of the continued growth by Canada West, which has now reached 16 full members," said Basil Hughton, Canada West President and Director of Athletics for the University of Saskatchewan. "Today's outcome demonstrates that Mount Royal and UNBC have become fully integrated into our league and are supported by members conference-wide."

"I want to thank everyone involved for the work that has gone into this application over the many years, for the support you have given and the dedication we as an institution and department that has time and again been displayed," Karla Karch, Cougar Athletics Director. "I am so proud of this accomplishment and to be part of Cougar Athletics."

There is one final step in the process for Mount Royal and UNBC as they look for full Canadian Interuniversity Sport membership status at the CIS AGM, June 9-13 in Vancouver, while at the same time MacEwan will formally seek to become a probationary member of CIS.

Please direct questions to Diane St-Denis, Canada West Executive Director, at (604) 475-1213.
