Thunderbirds Hand the Cougars a Big Loss on Home Court

Calgary â€" The Mount Royal Cougars lost 76-55 to the UBC Thunderbirds on Friday night at Kenyon Court.  Kedar Wright and David Wagner had 17 and 16 respectively for the Thunderbirds. Derek Wolf and Mangk Akwl scored 10 and 9 points for the Cougars.  

The first quarter started with some good pace and saw both teams running the floor and going hard to the rim. At 7-6 the Thunderbirds opened up some distance on the Cougars capped by a three pointer by Tonner Jackson. At the end of the first UBC led 21-17.

UBC went on an 8-0 run to start the second and that effectively crushed the Cougar's spirit. The Cougars could only muster up eight points in the quarter as bad decisions and sloppy turnovers began to pile up.  Fortunately UBC did not fare much better as they racked up only 14 in the quarter which kept the game reasonably close at 39-25.

The third quarter is where UBC blew the game wide open. Every time MRU scored the Thunderbirds would answer with a quick bucket and a stop. Their shooting from outside got hotter and it started to put the Cougars in a real hole as they trial 58-35 after the third.

In the fourth and final quarter the Cougars just hung on to keep the game from getting wildly out of hand. UBC led by as much as 21 and try as they might MRU couldn't answer. The Thunderbirds won every rebound and hit the shots when they had to. The Cougars dropped the game by a score of 76-55.

Mount Royal drops to 6-7 while UBC improves to a record of 6-7.

This all-important conference matchup will go again tomorrow evening. Tip-off will be at 8:00pm (MT).
