Friday, January 25, 2013 – Calgary, AB…Tatiana Rafter got the only goal in the shootout and lifted the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds to a 2-1 win over the Mount Royal University Cougars in and end-to-end Canada West women's hockey game on Friday in Calgary.
Rafter beat Cougars goalie Jess Ross — who faced a barrage of tough shots during regulation — with a wrist shot over the glove. Ross's counterpart, Danielle Dube, made all three stops in the shootout. The Thunderbirds improve to 12-7-4.
Stephanie Schaupmeyer forced overtime with a lucky goal with 8:20 remaining in the third period. She dumped the puck on net from the corner, where it was redirected by a Cougar stick into the goal.
Sydney Laurin scored for the Cougars, who are now 7-13-3 and are scrambling to jump into the sixth playoff spot with only a handful of games remaining on the conference regular season schedule.
The same teams play again Saturday at Flames Community Arenas at 2 p.m.
Dube saved Friday's game prior to the shootout too. With 10 seconds left in regulation time, Mount Royal's Michelle Ziegler got free on a breakaway from centre ice, only to have Dube close the door.
Ten minutes of 4-on-4 overtime settled nothing.
In the shootout, Mount Royal's Emily Harrison was stopped to start the proceedings when she tried to beat Dube through the five-hole. After Rafter scored, Dube turned back Tanika Dawson's deke attempt and UBC's Nikola-Brown-John then flubbed her shot on Ross.
It came down to Dube getting her stick down in time to stop Mount Royal captain Chrissy Hodgson as she tried to sneak the puck between the goalie's pads with the final shot.
Laurin's goal came on the power play with 2:33 left in the first period. Her slap shot from the right point got through a crowd in front of the net and eluded Dube's glove.
The Thunderbirds held the edge in shots, 31-28. The Cougars were 1-for-3 on the power play while the Thunderbirds came up empty in four tries.
