Shawn Sky has been the driving force behind Mount Royal University’s men’s volleyball program since 2004, bringing with him a legacy of excellence both on the court and in the classroom. Prior to joining MRU, he led the Grant MacEwan Griffins in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) for two seasons, laying the foundation for a successful coaching career.
During MRU’s tenure in the ACAC, Coach Sky guided the Cougars to two conference championships, a CCAA National Championship in 2008, and two CCAA National Bronze medals. His leadership earned him ACAC Coach of the Year honours in 2010.

Since the program’s transition to Canada West – widely regarded as the most competitive volleyball conference in the country – Sky has kept the Cougars strong and playoff-bound, reaching the postseason for the first time in 2015–16. His commitment to holistic development has helped numerous athletes excel at national and international levels, including appearances at the FISU Games and placements in Volleyball Canada’s National Team Training Centre.

Shawn holds a Master of Science in Sport Psychology from the University of Idaho and dual Bachelor’s degrees in Education and Commerce from the University of Alberta. Beyond coaching, he served as an Assistant Professor in MRU’s Department of Health and Physical Education from 2004 to 2018, primarily teaching Sport Psychology. His coaching experience extends internationally, having led Canada’s Youth National Team in 2018 and served as an assistant with the Junior National Team in 2006.

Shawn is known not just for his competitive edge, but for his dedication to developing strong, well-rounded individuals on the court and beyond.
