Originally from Winnipeg, Man., Shane Smith played in a variety of post-secondary institutions including Grant MacEwan from 2000-01, followed by the University of Manitoba where he earned his Bachelor of Physical Education and Bachelor of Education Degree. Later, Smith earned his Master of Education Degree in Coaching Studies from the University of Victoria.

Smith was an assistant coach and and scout for the Canadian Women’s National Team, competing in many events including the 2014 World Championship, the 2015 Pan Am Games and the 2016 Olympic Qualifier. Smith began coaching at the U SPORTS level in 2013 assisting with the University of Winnipeg Wesmen men’s team. He has also worked as an assistant with both the Brandon University men’s and women’s team, and as the interim head coach with the University of Regina women’s team.

Another highlight in his coaching career is Smith's time in Denmark where coached professionally and won the Danish Cup and Danish National Championship with Gentofte Volley.
