Box Score CALGARY – Thomas Stuber's first career Canada West goal led the Mount Royal University Cougars to a 2-0 win over the UBCO Heat in men's soccer action at MRU Stadium Field.

Mount Royal nearly opened the scoring just 45 seconds into Sunday's match when Jaise Shaw connected with the ball inside the six yard box but sent it just over top of the crossbar. 

Despite Shaw narrowly missing, the Cougars had set the tone for the afternoon.

In the 29th minute, MRU third-year winger Bwidju Mutongolo thought he had given his team the lead when he struck a low shot that found the net but the flag had gone up to signal offside. 

Less than a minute later, Mutongolo found himself on the attack again before firing a shot that was saved initially by Heat goalkeeper Ronan Woodroffe but the rebound kicked out to Finn Marshall who finished it off for his second goal in as many games and fourth of the 2026 campaign.

Marshall was content with how the Cougars played on Sunday but admitted it took some time to get comfortable.

"It took us a little while to grow into the game and start getting our shots off," said Marshall. "In the second half we began to up our pressure. But overall I think it was a dominant performance by us."

Mount Royal nearly extended their advantage on the last kick of the first half when Jonathan Walter bent a free kick around the UBCO wall but Woodroffe made arguably his best save of the day, diving around and keeping the ball out of the top corner.

The veteran keeper Woodroffe made nine saves on Sunday.

In the 83rd minute, the Cougars added their second goal of the match. Marshall was on the other end of this goal as he sent a low cross into the box and rookie midfielder Thomas Stuber converted, shooting into the gaping net.

A special moment for the first year and Calgary-product to get his first career goal on home turf.

Mount Royal would hold on for the 2-0 win. They improve to 6-2-1 on the season while the Heat remain winless with an 0-8 record.

UBCO will be back at home next weekend to host the Saskatchewan Huskies while the Cougars begin an extended road trip that doesn't see them back home until October 24 when they eventually take on the Calgary Dinos.
