CALGARY — The Mount Royal University Cougars continued their winning ways Friday night, earning a 2-0 victory over the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack at MRU Stadium.

Coming off three straight victories, the Cougars carried their momentum into Friday's matchup, controlling the majority of possession and dictating the pace of play throughout the opening half. MRU moved the ball well through the midfield and consistently kept the WolfPack on their heels, creating several quality opportunities in the opening 45 minutes.

MRU opened the scoring in the ninth minute after earning a penalty kick. Finn Marshall stepped up to the spot and calmly converted, giving the Cougars midfielder his third goal of the season and putting MRU ahead 1-0.

Just four minutes later, the Cougars doubled their advantage. Jaise Shaw created space before finding JJ Walter, who walked into an opportunity just outside the box and ripped a shot past the TRU keeper for his second goal of the season. The quick start gave MRU a two-goal cushion early and allowed the Cougars to continue dictating the pace of the game on their terms.

The Cougars continued to generate chances throughout the remainder of the half. Green nearly connected with Bwidju Mutongolo on a dangerous cross, while MRU continued to find space in and around the WolfPack penalty area. TRU struggled to establish possession or generate sustained pressure in the opening 45 minutes, as MRU entered halftime with a 2-0 advantage.

The WolfPack came out with more urgency in the second half, earning a pair of yellow cards in the opening seven minutes as they attempted to disrupt the Cougars' rhythm. Offensively, TRU began creating more opportunities and putting increased pressure on the MRU backline, forcing Cougars goalkeeper Sjard Strauss to remain sharp.

In the 63rd minute, Strauss came up with his biggest save of the night, turning aside TRU's best scoring opportunity and preserving the Cougars' two-goal lead. The WolfPack continued to apply pressure throughout the second half and created multiple quality chances, but Strauss and the MRU defense held firm to keep TRU off the scoresheet.

Despite the increased pressure from the visitors, the Cougars remained composed through the final stages of the match, closing out their fourth consecutive victory and securing another clean sheet.

The clean sheet was a significant milestone for Strauss, who tied the MRU men's soccer program record for career shutouts (12). His performance between the posts helped the Cougars preserve their two-goal advantage and complete another strong defensive effort.
With the victory, the Cougars continue their strong run of form and will look to make it five straight when they return to MRU Stadium on Sunday, Sept. 27 to host the UBCO Heat.
