MHKY: Kyle Walker signs with the Reading Royals

Captain of the Mount Royal Men's Hockey Team Kyle Walker has signed a professional contract with the Reading Royals of the ECHL, marking the next step after completing one of the best careers in Cougars history. The Royals are the ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.

Kyle Walker's Cougars resume is one of the most impressive in the history of the program. Walker ranks 2nd in all time games played, 4th in all time assists, 5th in all time points by a defenceman, and 4th in all time goals by a defenceman.

The 2025–26 season marked a career year for Walker. He matched a personal best in goals, set a new high in assists, and surpassed the 20-point mark for the first time in his U SPORTS career, while helping lead the Cougars to their second Canada West Final and a return to the U SPORTS University Cup. Walker's +30 rating led all Cougars skaters and ranked 2nd across the Canada West Conference—further highlighting the steady, reliable presence he provided on the blue line over his five seasons.

Walker departs the program having set a standard of excellence, commitment, and leadership that will resonate well beyond his final season. During a time in which the MRU men's hockey team attained their highest level of success, Kyle Walker defined the meaning of leadership through his standard of play on the ice but also through his constant engagement with the community around him.

As for the Royals, they currently sit 4th in the North Division as they push toward securing a playoff spot. Walker's composed, physical, and dependable style of play positions him to contribute immediately, while also giving him the opportunity to progress within the organization and pursue higher levels of professional hockey.

With his professional career now underway, Walker leaves Mount Royal as one of the program's most reliable and respected leaders. His impact will be felt long after his final shift, as he begins the next chapter at the pro level.
