Mount Royal University men's hockey defenceman
Clay Hanus has signed a professional contract with the Calgary Wranglers of the American Hockey League, marking the next step in his hockey career after a historic career at the university level with the Cougars. The Wranglers serve as the AHL affiliate of the Calgary Flames, he has been assigned to the Rapid City Rush, the ECHL affiliate of the organization.
Hanus leaves MRU as one of the most accomplished players in Cougars history. The Rush will be adding the program's all time leader among defencemen in goals (31), assists (82), and points (113).
The 2024-25 season marked the peak of Hanus' individual accolades during his tenure with the Cougars. During this season Hanus was named U SPORTS Player of the Year and Defenceman of the Year, while also earning First Team All-Canadian honours. At the conference level, he swept Canada West awards as Player of the Year and Top Defenceman, in addition to being named a First Team All-Star. Hanus played a central role in leading the Cougars to a Canada West silver medal, producing 43 points (12 goals, 31 assists) in 28 games.
Hanus remained a key contributor in 2025-26, earning a spot on the Canada West Second All-Star Team. Despite appearing in just 18 games, Hanus led all Cougars defencemen in scoring with 23 points (4 goals, 19 assists). He carried that production into the postseason, once again leading MRU blue liners in scoring while helping the program attain a second Canada West silver medal and secure its second-ever berth at the U SPORTS University Cup.
Hanus now joins a Rapid City roster that presents an opportunity to step in and contribute right away. With the Calgary Flames organization in a transitional phase, opportunities for young, emerging players are expected to increase. Hanus' offensive instincts, vision, and ability to dictate play from the back end makes him a natural fit within the prospect system.
While reflecting on Hanus' time with the Cougars, the rate in which he established himself as one of the cornerstone players of the program is truly remarkable. Over his 4 seasons, Hanus was able to build an ironclad case as the best defenceman in MRU's hockey history with a style of play that made him a fan favorite but also a driving force during the program's most successful era.
