CALGARY – Amy Swayze's 42-save performance led the University of Regina Cougars to a 2-1 upset win over the Mount Royal University Cougars on Saturday night at Flames Community Arena.
A flurry of first-period penalties all went unconverted, but late in the opening frame, Regina got on the board while at even strength.
Virtually all alone but surrounded by Mount Royal skaters, Kaylee Dyer somehow got off a hard shot that lasered into the top corner. Heading into the second period, Regina has the all-important lead, despite being outshot 19-4
Midway through the second period, the hockey game was put on hold after a scary collision between Regina's Rayna Hennie and MRU's Keyan Bert. Hennie was able to get up and skate off, but Bert was not. The MRU rookie forward was alert and awake but taken to the hospital to treat her injuries.
The two teams were sent to their dressing rooms with 6:27 left in the second period for an early intermission.
After the delay, the players courageously returned to the ice to complete the rest of the game after the frightening incident.
With playing a hockey game in the back of their mind and their teammate's health at the forefront, Mount Royal was given a near impossible task of trying to come back.
Just 21 seconds after returning to the ice, Regina extended their lead to two. Kaylee Dyer notched her second of the game and third of the weekend with a nifty deflection off Olivia Leggett's point shot.
Mount Royal cut the deficit back to one with 29 seconds left in the period.
Julia Duke scored her eighth of the season, curling around the faceoff circle and sniping a shot past the glove of Amy Swayze's glove.
Despite MRU's shifted momentum, they were unable to solve Swayze the rest of the way through. The rookie netminder shut down Mount Royal on all 13 of their third-period shots.
With the win, Regina stays in the playoff hunt and sits just four points behind Saskatchewan for the final East division playoff spot.
Although suffering the 2-1 setback, Mount Royal holds onto first place in the division with a seven-point lead over the Calgary Dinos.
