WSOC: Cougars shutout the Griffins in 2-0 win

Cougars defense shuts down the Griffins to stay undefeated.

It was overcast and 25 degrees at Field 2 for kickoff as the Mount Royal University Cougars take on the MacEwen University Griffins.

The MacEwen Griffins are coming into this game being ranked in the 9th spot of USports Top 10 in Women's soccer, while looking for a bounce back coming off a loss to the Calgary Dinos yesterday.

Dany Juarez had a creative scoring chances, off her back foot but the initial stop was put up by Griffins keeper Sabrina Alexander, it trickled by her towards the goal but she dove to fully stop the chance.

Off a corner kick give and go Analisa Galvez had a chance to put a header shot, Alexander put up the stop.

Griffins are applying the pressure throughout the half, especially against the Cougars first touch.

In the 21st minute a yellow card was assessed to Griffins Brynn Hobal for persistent defences.

In the 34th minute Gabrielle Linford forced a turnover near mid field while bringing the ball up field she sent a pass to the speeding Juarez at the left corner of the keepers box and Juarez was able to bury the shot. To give the cougars the lead 1-0.

At half the score is 1-0 after Juarez's third goal of the season.

Throughout the second half, Griffins have not lost any momentum and continue to apply pressure to the Cougars offence.

In the 60th minute the Cougars found themselves with a corner kick, Tamara Djurisic sent the ball to Isabella Chirico, who headed the ball into the net, the crowd and the Cougars erupted while celebrating the captains first goal of the season.

In the 77th minute Kayla Franks received a yellow card for delay of reply, for kicking the ball down the field after the Cougars received a foul.

Djurisic had a scoring chance, off a great pass and while being left alone in front of the net, trying to extend the lead in the 84th minute, her shot went wide of the net.

Griffins had a chance in the 86th minute, with Alyx Henderson having an open net, her long shot steered wide of the net.

Cougars, Analisa Galvez was assessed a yellow card after receiving a foul, making that the teams second yellow card of the game.

During added time, the Griffins are applying the pressure challenging the Cougars defence.

The Cougars keep the score 2-0 and beat the Griffins in a defensive fashion.

Post game Siddaly Alcock had to say "it was really great to be able to beat them, especially at home" speaking on the recent rankings by Usport putting the Griffins women's soccer team at 9th in the country.

Being undefeated at this point in the season Alcock added that, "it's really exciting, because I know in the past few years our scores have been up and down, so it's really great to be able to get up and win. It gets us a little bit more confidence going into the season."

The Cougars are back in action next weekend, hoping to keep their undefeated streak going in Winnipeg against the University of Manitoba Bisons.
