CALGARY – The Mount Royal University Cougars earned their second win in a row, defeating the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns 4-1 on Saturday afternoon in Canada West women's soccer action.
The Cougars' all-time leader in goals,
Tamara Djurisic, added another tally to her name. In the 17th minute,
Madeleine Albert sent a through ball to Djurisic, a few feet inside the box. After having her first attempt blocked, Djursic shot the ball again, this time finding the back of the net to make it 1-0 for MRU.
Mount Royal added to their lead in the 27th minute.
Analisa Galvez got her foot on the ball just before Lethbridge goalkeeper Kate Prince could pounce on it. Galvez's touch put the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
"I saw [Djurisic] in the middle and we did a little one-two, and then it was just a little touch into the corner. It was really nice," said Galvez, describing her goal.
In the 30th minute, the Pronghorns got their best chance of the half when Kiandra Boulter rang a shot off the short side post.Â
Despite the dangerous opportunity from Boulter, the score remained 2-0 for MRU going into the halftime break.
Going into the second half, Lethbridge was keen to get themselves back in the game.
In the 50th minute, the Pronghorns were awarded a penalty. Viktoria Birglechner stepped up to the spot and made no mistake to cut the Cougars' lead to 2-1.
However, the deficit was down to one for just a few minutes. In the 54th minute,
Analisa Galvez delivered an outstanding strike from 16 yards out into the top left corner for her second of the match.
The Cougars added another goal in the 57th minute. After putting her initial shot off the crossbar, veteran midfielder
Jordan Grundl collected her own rebound and tapped the ball past Boulter to make it 4-1 for Mount Royal.
The 4-1 score would hold until the final whistle with MRU improving to 7-1-1 in 2025 while Lethbridge falls to 0-8-1.Â
The Cougars and Horns will go head-to-head once again on Sunday at Mount Royal Royal Field 2. Mount Royal will look to extend their win streak to three while Lethbridge is still in pursuit of their first win in 2025.
