MHKY: Saturday, Feb. 1 at University of Calgary Dinos
The MRU Cougars men's hockey team marched into Father David Bauer Arena, determined to avenge themselves after Friday's Crowchild Classic loss. WIth their dominant defense and lethal goal-scoring ability, the Cougars shut out the Dinos in their final match of the season by a 5-0 margin.
Â
Each of the Cougars' goals came from a different player as the whole team rallied together against their archrivals. Justin Lies took first blood 15 minutes into the first period as he scored on a brilliant forecheck by Tristan Zandee, who dropped off a pass for Layton Feist. The freshman found Josh Tarzwell open in the slot, who slid a perfect pass to Lies for an emphatic first goal.Â
Â
Teague Patton potted the second goal of the night just one minute later by cashing in on Jayden Wiens' rebound in front of the net and by the end of the first period, the Cougars had taken a 2-0 lead.
Â
Dawson Milliken was next to join the MRU scoring party on a mid-second period slot shot set up by Zafir Rawji and Michael Ladyman. With just over two minutes left in the middle slate of the match and MRU up 3-0, the Dinos picked up a tripping penalty. Robbie Holmes made them pay 36 seconds into the power play with a pair of rebound shots, banging the first one off the woodwork before putting the second one into the back of the net to put the Cougars up 4-0.
Â
MRU remained up 4-0 heading into the third period, but were not done scoring as Zandee intercepted an errant Dinos pass and found Blake Stevenson open for a wicked wrist shot with just over a minute left in the game. The Cougars held onto their 5-0 lead until the final buzzer as they beat their cross-town rivals in their final matchup of the regular season.Â
Â
Shane Farkas earned his third shutout of the season, which tied Alberta netminder Tyler Palmer for the most shutouts in the conference, by saving all 15 of the Dinos' shots on goal.Â

The MRU Cougars men's hockey team will be back on the ice on Friday, Feb. 7 to take on the University of Regina Cougars at Flames Community Arena and live on Canada West TV at 7 p.m.
