The MRU Cougars ended their basketball, volleyball and hockey seasons on a high note, with only one team not qualifying for the post-season. Both of this week's Players Bench Athletes of the Week earned their honours on the road and will be playing in this year's Canada West Playoffs. Check out their incredible performances below.
Â
Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week: Jenika Martens (WBB)
Jenika Martens dominated all weekend long in MRU's two-game series against the University of Manitoba Bisons. Racking up a whopping 36 points, 19 rebs, 7 steals, and 5 assists in those two games, Martens was instrumental in helping the Cougars end their season with a pair of wins away from home.
Â
On Friday, Martens put up 18 points, 12 rebounds, six steals, and an assist, even hitting a shot from three-point range in the Cougars' 76-57 win over the Bisons. She followed that up with another 18-point outing, also bringing in seven rebounds, four assists, and a steal in MRU's 90-78 win over Manitoba.Â
Â
Martens will be a key piece in MRU's upcoming playoff run, which starts with their play-in game against the Trinity Western University Spartans at the University of Saskatchewan on Friday, Feb. 21 at 1 p.m. in Saskatoon and live on Canada West TV.
Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week: Teague Patton (MHKY)
Teauge Patton secured his first-ever U SPORTS hat trick in MRU's Friday night 8-0 rout of the TWU Spartans. In two games last weekend, Patton raked in three goals and two assists as MRU earned their fifth and sixth shutouts of the year to end their season as the top-ranked team in the West division.
Â
Patton started his reign of terror in the second period of MRU's Friday night match against TWU, scoring six minutes into it. He followed that up with another goal just four minutes later and scored his final goal of the weekend on a third-period powerplay. Even though he didn't score on Saturday, Patton played a huge role in the Cougars' 4-0 win over the Spartans, assisting on Blake Stevenson and Robbie Fromm-Delorme's goals.Â
Â
The men's hockey team earned a first-round playoff bye this week and will begin their playoff run next week as they take on the winner of the three-game series between the University of Alberta Golden Bears and the University of Calgary Dinos, which starts on Friday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. in Edmonton and live on Canada West TV.
