The MRU Cougars hockey teams enjoyed a highly bountiful weekend series, with the women's team travelling to Regina and the men's team skating at Flames Community Arena. Both teams beat the University of Regina Cougars in all four of their matchups and, as a result of their continued success, MRU's men's hockey team advanced one spot in this week's U SPORTS Top 10 rankings, placing fourth, while the women's hockey team held their spot in sixth.
The men's hockey team hosted the University of Regina Cougars for their final regular season series last weekend, annihilating their competition in two consecutive blowout wins. With their pair of victories, MRU moved up to first place in the West division with their 20-6-0 record.Â
On Friday night, MRU out-shot Regina 57-16 on their way to a dominant 9-0 home win, thanks to
Josh Tarzwell's four-goal outing. The Cougars also received scoring contributions from
Kyle Walker,
Justin Lies,
Robbie Holmes,
Vaughn Watterodt, and
Blake Stevenson, while
Shane Farkas earned his fourth shutout of the season.Â
MRU carried their feverish Friday night energy with them into Saturday night's game, winning 8-3 and out-shooting Regina 53-24 in the process. After a pair of goals from
Jayden Wiens and a
Connor Bouchard score, MRU conceded a pair of Regina power play goals.Â
Regina even tied the game in the second period, but that only injected life into MRU's skaters as Wiens seized the lead back for his team and completed his first career hat trick.
Clay Hanus,
Teague Patton and Stevenson also scored in the third period, moving MRU firmly into first place in the division and ranking them fourth in this week's U SPORTS Top 10.
The MRU Cougars men's hockey team will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 14 as they take on the TWU Spartans at 8 p.m. in Langley, B.C. and live on Canada West TV.
The women's team had to travel to Regina to find their pair of wins, and did so in two tightly contested matches, including a nail-biting overtime win on Saturday night. With their deuce of wins, the MRU women's hockey team held on to their second-place ranking in the West division with their 18-4-4 record.
On Friday night, MRU marched into Regina for their penultimate weekend of the season and final matches against the University of Regina Cougars.
Jerzey Watteyne opened the scoring for MRU in the first period, along with Alexandria Spence. No goals were scored by either team in the second period, but Regina struck back in the third to bring the score to 2-1.
Allee Gerrard shut down any hopes of a comeback with a goal of her own, and even though Regina would find the back of the net one more time in the waning moments of the game, MRU held on until the final buzzer to win 3-2.
Saturday's game ended with the same 3-2 score, but was an entirely different game altogether.
Kiana McNinch and
Lyndsey Janes were the only skaters to score in the first period, and both teams went scoreless once again in the second. However, Regina stepped up their game in the third period, scoring first off of a power-play and then potting home a goal in 5-on-5 action to tie the game. That sent the match into overtime, and with time winding down at the end of the extra period,
Aliya Jomha took out her do-it-herself kit and scored unassisted to win the game.Â
As a result of their resilient wins, the MRU Cougars women's hockey team maintained their sixth-place ranking in this week's U SPORTS Top 10. Their next game will be on Friday, Feb. 14 as they host the TWU Spartans at 7 p.m. at Flames Community Arena and live on Canada West TV.
