WHKY: Spence, Jomha lead Cougars to bounce back win over Dinos

Box Score

CALGARY –  Aliya Jomha's milestone-filled season continued on Saturday as she set two new Mount Royal records in the Cougars' 5-2 win over the University of Calgary Dinos.

The fourth-year forward had two goals and two assists to move her past her former linemate Tatum Amy (81 career points) for the MRU all-time lead in points. Additionally, Jomha tied her other former linemate from the team's national championship-winning season, Courtney Kollman, for the program record for most single-season goals (12).

"I've been fortunate to play with lots of great players over the years. It feels great to help the team and get the wins," said Jomha.

Kaitlyn Ross stayed consistent with her solid performance at the Saddledome on Friday with another stellar game, this time in a winning effort. Early in the first Ross made one of her best saves of the season, robbing Brooklyn Anderson who tried to deke to her backhand but was shut down by Ross's pad.

The Cougars got on the board first for the second straight game with 6:45 left in the first. Alex Spence's centring pass found the skate of Allee Gerrard, redirecting into the open net.

After a brief discussion between the officials, it was determined that Gerrard did not make a kicking motion and the call on the ice was confirmed as a good goal.

A few minutes into the second period, the Dinos knotted the game at one with an excellent goal. Brooklyn Anderson made a superb pass into the slot to Josie McLeod who sniped a shot post and in.

Anderson put together a fantastic weekend with the tying goal on Friday followed by her helper in Saturday's rematch.

A few minutes later, the Cougars restored their lead with Jomha's first of the night. Alex Spence intentionally fired her point shot wide, causing the puck to bounce off the end boards right to Jomha who tapped in the puck on the doorstep of the crease.

Spence recorded a career-high four points on Saturday including her clever play on Mount Royal's second goal.

Just over two minutes later, Jomha got her second of the night on the powerplay. Athena Hauck faked out the entire Dinos penalty kill unit with a no-look pass to Jomha who one-timed a shot past Amelia Awad.

Although the officials did not originally award a goal, a brief conference determined that the puck did go in and suddenly the Cougars had a 3-1 lead.
While on another powerplay late in the period, Alex Spence sent another point shot towards the Dino net. Sydney Benko skillfully redirected the puck, fooling Awad and giving MRU a 4-1 lead heading into the final 20 minutes.

Sydney Mercier, the shootout hero at the Saddledome on Friday, cut the deficit back to two with a goal with just under four minutes to play.

However, the Cougars would kill off any chance the Dinos had to complete the comeback. Abbey Borbandy iced the game with an empty net goal from her own blueline. After having just one goal in her first three years, Borbandy has notched five goals in her fourth year with the Cougars.

Mount Royal felt satisfied to come away with the win after a disappointing defeat at Friday's Crowchild Classic at the Saddledome.

"We were playing with more pace today. More execution," said Aliya Jomha, following the Cougars' 16th win of the year.

MRU takes their  16-4-4 record on the road next weekend as they head east for their only regular season series against the University of Regina Cougars. Regina is eyeing the final Eastern playoff spot with a 10-10-4 record.
