WVB: Regina Claims Four-Set Victory Over MRU in Calgary

It was an all-cougar clash on Friday night at Kenyon Court, as the 2-6 Mount Royal Cougars hosted the 2-8 Regina Cougars. Both teams looked to break their losing streak, with MRU also looking for their first win at home on the season.

Regina was led by Jordy McEachern, who ended with 14 kills and 16 digs on the night. McEachern also had a tremendous game serving the ball, finishing with a game-high four serving aces. MRU's Sydney Scatcherd led the way for her squad with 15 kills and 13 digs on the night, while Bronwynn Davies-Neira put up 13 kills of her own.

The first set was full of action, and some electric rallies between the two teams. Regina hung onto the lead for a majority of the set, but the relentless service pressure by MRU kept them in the fight. All tied up at 23 late, a service ace by Davies-Neira ended set number one in favour of MRU winning by a score of 25-23.

Set two mirrored the first in intensity, a back and forth effort with both teams trying to take the advantage and gain an important lead. A late set timeout left Regina in the lead up five points, 24-19. McEachern and Schultz led the way to victory for Regina, helping their team win 25-19.

A huge kill by Regina's Piper Harkness tied the third set up early at 4-4. A dominant performance from MRU's Raven Ogbodu and Faith Obasi seemingly were everywhere on the court, showcasing their impact in a variety of ways. Late into this set though, Regina held the 24-20 lead late, and a huge block by Schultz ended the set in favour of Regina as they took the third set 25-20.

MRU looked to get ahead early in a dire fourth set, hoping to make their presence known offensively against a tough Regina squad. Another kill for Schultz in this set helped Regina level up the score at 4-4, not long before Sydney Scatcherd would get an important service ace to put MRU up 6-4 in the set. Regina looked poised to win late while up five points late with a 23-18 lead, but the resiliency from Davies-Neira showed as she helped MRU get an important kill to cut the lead to 4 points. MRU battled until the very end, but ultimately Regina pulled out the fourth set win 25-20.

Regina takes this all-cougar battle 3-1, as MRU looks to get their revenge tomorrow night at 4 p.m.
