The 3-6 Pronghorns look for a win to avoid the weekend sweep against the 6-3 Cougars, who are coming off of a nail-biting win in last night's matchup.
The story early in this game was the turnover battle, with the Cougars capitalizing on the 13 first-half Pronghorn turnovers scoring 17 points off of them alone. The Cougars also hung their hats on the defensive end in the first half, with 9 steals as a squad.
The Pronghorns moved the ball extremely well in the first half, with 8 total team assists heading into the break. First-year forward Cole Steele hit a couple of big threes, leading the Pronghorns in scoring early and helping keep this one close at a score of 34-33 for the Cougars heading into the half.
Anytime one team scored, the other were even quicker with a response of their own. Both teams understood early in the second half that this game was going to be won on the defensive side of the ball. Second-year forward Faruq Balarabe looked to find the much-needed spark that the Cougars were searching for, while fifth-year guard Kymani Pollard came out swinging for the Pronghorns.
In the last 3 minutes of the third quarter, a Mason Hoffman three-ball put the Pronghorns up 1 point in another night of gritty hoops. Fourth-year guard Bryce Solis and Pollard each with 12 points in a piece, but a couple of free throws by first-year guard Desmond Ducheck and a huge fadeaway jumper from Sam Barnie gave the Cougars a 1 point lead heading into the final quarter of play.
A big three-pointer opened up the fourth quarter scoring from none other than second-year guard Tag Layton, who hit a huge one late against the Pronghorns just last night. Layton would go on to hit another three-ball minutes later, extending the Cougars lead to 9 points with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game.
The Pronghorns would fight back to cut the lead to just 1 point after a tough and-1 from second-year forward Joseph Lemieux. Pollard would do his best job trying to keep the Pronghorns in it, but would fall short as the Cougars hung on to win by a final score of 69-68.
Player of the Game: #6 Tag Layton who finished with 13 points shooting 4-9 from beyond the arc.
