The 5-4 Mount Royal Cougars look to sweep the weekend against the 2-7 Lethbridge Pronghorns on their home court.
The Cougars hope to extend their current 5 game winning streak to 6 games with a win tonight against a hard-fought Pronghorns squad.
Coming off of her historic night on Friday, Jenika Martens is inching closer and closer to becoming the Cougars all-time leader in points, as she entered tonight 34 points shy of the record.
It was a back and forth effort to start the game, both teams grinding hard on the defensive end.
Pronghorns duo Piper Dobbelsteyn and Courtney McKee combined for 12 of the team's 14 first quarter points to give them the early 14-10 lead.
The Cougars, led by Martens with 8 points, generated a run of their own outscoring the Pronghorns 25-16 in the second quarter, bringing the game to 33-30 for MRU heading into the half. Both of these teams found most of their first half success coming from in the paint.
Nora Luca came out strong in the second half, establishing her presence down-low early in the third quarter giving her team a 10 point lead. Martens took control from there, hitting a big three and another basket in the paint to give the Cougars a 53-40 lead heading into the final quarter of action.
Both teams were dominant on the glass tonight, with the Cougars outrebounding the Pronghorns 49-47 led by Martens, forward Jenessa Ramsoomair, and forward Elise Carline who all finished with 9 on the game and Luca not far behind with 8 of her own. It was a collaborative effort all game long from the home team, with everyone pitching in on the scoring sheet.
A late game three-ball from Mckee cut the lead to just 9 points with 2 minutes left in the final frame. Despite all efforts from Mckee and the Pronghorns team, it wasn't enough against the tenacious Cougars as they held onto their lead late into the fourth quarter to take the game 64-60.
Player of the game: Nora Luca who finished with 13 points along with 8 boards on the night.
