WHKY: Aliya Jomha receives President’s Student of the Year Award

Last week at Mount Royal's Celebrate U awards dinner, women's hockey alumna Aliya Jomha was honoured as the 2024-25 recipient of the President's Student of the Year Award.

Winners of this prestigious award must demonstrate academic achievement as well as leadership and community impact. They must also be a positive role model, embodying the values of the University.

Jomha graduated with a Psychology degree from Mount Royal last June, and is a four-time U SPORTS Academic All-Canadian. During her time at Mount Royal she demonstrated a commitment to intellectual growth and dedicated time to advancements in research. Jomha worked as a Research Assistant in the Riddell Library and as an Undergraduate Research Assistant for Dr. Dan Devoe in the Devoe Brain and Mental Health Research Lab. In her final term her honours thesis explored how athletic status and gender impact help seeking behaviour in undergraduate students.

On the Cougars women's hockey team Jomha was a leader for her teammates, taking initiative on and off the ice to help her team succeed as they represented MRU across Canada. She set records in the 2024-25 season as the all-time leader in goals (34), all-time leader in points (86), all-time leader in plus/minus, and single season goals scored (13). She was selected to represent MRU on Team Canada at the FISU tournament in Italy in January 2025 and was honoured as a 2025 Canada West first-team all-star and a U SPORTS second team All-Canadian. She was also a 2025 winner of the prestigious Mount Royal Brian Fleming Award, presented to a student-athlete who excels in academics, athletics and the community.

Although it was a highlight from a different year, Jomha was also a member of the historic U SPORTS National Championship women's hockey team in 2022-23.

Despite a busy schedule with academics and athletics, Jomha found time to support our Calgary community, volunteering at the Calgary Distress Center as an online services crisis responder and as an assistant for a PhD student at the University of Calgary in their dissertation research regarding brain and behaviour and the correlation to suicide.

"Winning the President's Student of the Year Award is truly an honor," said Jomha. "I feel extremely grateful to be recognized by Mount Royal in this capacity. I had so many amazing people support me through my undergraduate studies, including coaches, academic mentors, teammates and family. I can't thank these people enough for their endless support and inspiration."

Presently Jomha is studying Psychiatry at the University of Edmonton.
