Bowden Singleton and Tamara Djurisc Earn MRu's athlete of the week

This week kicked off the 2025-26 men's hockey season where the Cougars took of the Sasketchwan Huskies in a rematch of last years Canada West Finals. They split the series 1-1, losing Friday 2-3, followed by a bounce back win Saturday 6-2. The women's soccer team was also back in action at home against the Regina Cougars where they won 3-0 and then dropped Sundays game against the Huskies 0-2.

Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week: Bowden Singleton

Bowden Singleton played his first career Canada West games this past weekend in Saskatoon and made an immediate impact for the Cougars. After going down 2-0 to the Saskatchewan Huskies on Friday's season opener, Singleton got Mount Royal on the board for the first time in the 2025-26 campaign. The winger converted on a net-front pass from Dawson Milliken late in the second period. In Saturday's rematch, Singleton was a contributor again, earning the primary assist on Layton Feist's goal in the third period. The Cougars went on to win 6-2 to earn a weekend split with the Huskies.

Singleton, a first-year winger from Calgary, captained the Calgary Canucks to an AJHL Championship and a Centennial Cup title last season. He recorded 61 points in 38 games for the Canucks and has continued his success with Mount Royal early this season. His tenacious play style has shown he is set to have a fruitful career with the Cougars.

Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week: Tamara Djurisic

On Saturday afternoon it was a Cougar vs Cougar match up at Field 2. With momentum going back and forth throughout the first half.

In the 39th minute Tamara Djurisic gets the ball just at midfield, she weaves in and out through the Regina defenders. Making her way down the field, she has defenders all around her to the right corner of the net, and takes the shot. Notching her 7th goal of the season to open the scoring.

During the 77th minute, Djurisic is set to take the corner kick for MRU, she sends the kick on net, the ball bounces off Regina players and slips into the net, to get Djurisic's second goal of the game.

In the 89th minute, MRU is still up 2-0 and applying the pressure, after a take away at mid field, the ball is sent to Madeleine Albert, who sees a spring Djurisic headed toward Regina's net. Albert send the ball up to Djurisic, who has two defenders on her tail but is able to get by them and bury the ball past the keeper.

This was MRU's second ever hattrick performance, getting all the goals in the 3-0 win over the University of Regina.

After this performance, Djurisic is now leading the Canada West Conference in goals with 9 on the season while also being tied for total points in the conference with 14 for the season.

The third year Health & Phys Ed student set a Mount Royal University Cougars record for most goals in a single season, after adding her 9th of the season in the record setting performance on Saturday.
