CALGARY – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's hockey team shutout the Mount Royal University Cougars 1-0 to earn a series split in the opening weekend of Canada West play.
Third-year netminder
Kate Holan made her first start of the season for the Cougars. Previously, Holan had never lost a game as a member of MRU but was dealt her first loss by the Huskies on Saturday night.
Holan made an incredible halfway through the first period, stopping Saskatchewan forward Bronwyn Boucher point blank to keep it a 0-0 game.
After defeating the Huskies 3-1 on Friday, the Cougars struggled to replicate their offence in the rematch.
Just like Friday, there was no scoring in the first half of the game.
However, the Huskies broke the deadlock partway through the second period to take their first lead of the weekend. After being robbed by Holan in the first, Bronwyn Boucher got her revenge.
Jayde Cadieux slid a pass to a rushing Boucher who patiently waited until she was in the perfect spot before firing a wrist shot past Holan's blocker.
The Huskies' kept their lead and held on for the win, coming up with a few huge blocks while the Cougars had their goalie pulled for an extra attacker.
After the first weekend of play, Mount Royal shares a 1-1 record with Saskatchewan, Calgary and Regina in a logjammed East Division.
Next weekend, the Cougars take on their crosstown rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos in a home-and-home, starting with a game at FCA on Friday.
