WVB: Cougars just short of comeback in loss to Huskies

Huskies take the sets 3-2 while the Cougars generated points late in the game.

The Cougars host in the Huskies in what they hope to be a bounce back game after losing their home opener on Friday night. The Huskies are leading 18-16 with Jessica Bergstrom having four kills. Taryn Hannah lays out a kill of the Huskies, as they take the lead 21-18.

Grace Coulter gets a kill down and the Cougars are trailing by four, the Cougars make a service error, and the Huskies are up 24-19. The Cougars force a few errors and they're only down by two. The Huskies make out with the win of set one, 25-22.

Hannah and Bergstrom come out of the set with four kills each and Tielle Hagel getting 11 assists for the Huskies, with Bronwynn Davies-Neira having three kills and Kennedy Williscroft having seven assists for the Cougars.

Sydney Scatcherd and Faith Obasi lay down a block to get eh second set tied at six. Bergstrom gets down another kill for the Huskies as they take the lead 13-7. Aurora Bentrim gets down a kill to get the Cougars closer to the 18-11 score. Obasi gets down two kills in a row while still trailing 20-14.

Keely Anderson gets a set winning kill down, as Huskies take the lead within the game. For the Huskies Hannah has got down six kills through the two sets and Davies-Neira has five kills throughout the two sets. 4

The Cougars are maintaining the lead through the third set, leading 9-5. Davies-Neira gets down a kill to be leading 10-8, the Cougars have a service error, and give up a point, but get one right back with a heavy kill by Bentrim, as they lead 11-9. Obasi gets down an ace, to lead 12-9.

The Huskies halt the cougars point streak with a kill by Hannah, but the Cougars fire right back with a kill from Mya Morgan to lead by three. Aidan Woloshyn and Anderson get down a block for the Huskies to tie the set at 13. Woloshyn gets into a serving streak as the Huskies get five points consecutively and lead 19-14. Davies-Neira gets possession back for the Cougars with a kill, as they trail 20-16.

Jordan Wallace lays a kill down as the Huskies lead 21-17. Scatcherd gets a kill and the Cougars are within three. Bentrim gets her sixth kill of the game, and gets the Cougars only trailing by two. Keeping the score within two Morgan gets a kill down the score is 23-21. Great digs to keep the rally going by Davies-Neira and Fiona Brown, the ball gets to Bentrim and she gets another kill down and it's tied at 23. Bentrim gets the set winning kill, as the Cougars take the third set 25-23.

Going into the set four Bentrim leads the Cougars with eight kills, and Brown has seven digs for the Cougars. On the Huskies end Hannah and Rosetta Cyr each have eight kills throughout.
Morgan lays down a kill as the Cougars plan for a come-back starts in this fourth set and gets the score within two, as the Huskies lead 8-6. A great dig by Davies-Neira forces a Huskies mistake and the set is tied at 9. After a string of Cougars mistakes the Huskies take the lead 14-9. Obasi gets a kill as the Cougars still trail 16-10. Morgan gets a block down, as Megan Jones hopes to serve up a streak. With two blocks in a row from Morgan the Cougars are within three, with the score at 18-15.

Morgan and Scatcherd get a block down, as the score is 22-21 for the Huskies. With a fifth set looming, the Cougars have tied the set at 22. Brown gets a dig out, Scatcherd capitalizes on the kill and the Cougars lead 24-23. Obasi gets down a set winning block, as the Cougars take the set 26-24.

We have gone into a fifth set at Kenyon Court as the comeback is on for the Cougars. The Huskies take the lead 6-2 in the winner takes all set. Cyr gets her 10th kill of the game for the Huskies as they take the lead 7-3. Hannah gets a point for the Huskies as they go up 10-4. Morgan gets two kills in a row to have the Cougars trialing by 6. The Huskies take the fifth set 15-7.
The Huskies take the win 3-2, as the Cougars were just short of the comeback win. Hagel comes out of the game with 45 assists, and Hannah having 14 kills with teammates Anderson and Cyr with 13 for the Huskies.

Cougars player of the game Bentrim had 10 kills and four digs through the game, the Cougars looked for the bounce back win had to say, "We were definitely really hungry to go in after last night. and we gave home every good battle." She added about what the mindset is like throughout the game "we're in flow stage just having fun together, doing our jobs, and I think we got there, especially in the 3rd and 4th set tonight."

The Cougars now are into Manitoba against the Brandon University Bobcats, next weekend, as the Cougars are still on the hunt for their first win of the season.
