Box Score CALGARY – The Mount Royal University Cougars completed a weekend sweep over the University of Manitoba Bisons with a 4-0 win on Saturday afternoon at Flames Community Arena.
Just like they did in Friday's contest, Mount Royal opened the scoring; however, this time, they did it in the first period.
Sydney Benko made a fantastic move to deke the Bisons' defender, similar to
Summer Fomradas' overtime goal on Friday. With the open space, Benko found
Kiana McNinch crashing the net for a pretty 1-0 goal.
The marker would be McNinch's first of the season, as she grabbed the monkey off her back in celebration.
The second period was highlighted by outstanding play from the goaltenders, with MRU's
Scout Anderson shutting down any Manitoba chance and Emily Shippam matching her play in the Bisons' crease.
Cougars rookie
Kirby Gray was called for a slewfooting double minor late in the period but Manitoba was unable to capitalize. Mount Royal was doing an excellent job clogging shooting lanes and blocking the Bisons' shots.
The score remained 1-0 heading into the final 20 minutes.
Partway through the third, MRU added some insurance.
Allee Gerrard got her second goal of the weekend when she let a shot go from the top of the faceoff circle, barely squeaking the puck through Shippam to make it 2-0.
Desperate to get on the board, Manitoba pulled their goalie for an extra attacker with the draw in the Mount Royal end. After the Cougars won the faceoff, they took the puck down the ice with
Keyana Bert scoring into the empty net.
Julia Duke added another empty netter for her third goal of the year, making it 4-0.
Scout Anderson stopped all 21 shots she faced for her second shutout of the year and eighth of her career.
Following their fifth straight win, the Cougars remain atop the East Division in the Canada West alongside their crosstown rivals, the University of Calgary Dinos.
Mount Royal enters their bye week but return to play on November 7 when they host the Canada West defending champion University of Alberta Pandas.
