Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week: Sydney Benko
Â
Sydeny Benko had a three goal weekend in the Cougars women's hockey team sweep over the MacEwan Griffins to earn this week's Female Athlete of the Week.
Â
In Friday's home contest, Benko recorded her second career two-goal game in a 2-0 win over the Griffins. Both of the forward's tallies came off deflections from point shots. Benko got her first with a tip in front and then had her second hit off her body as she cut across the ice. On Saturday in Edmonton, Benko opened the scoring in the first period, this time with her pouncing on a rebound at the goalmouth. The Cougars would go on to win 3-2 in a shootout.
Â
Along with her three goals, Benko had 12 shots on goal across the two games. Now with four goals on the year, the Calgarian ranks tied for first in the Canada West after six games. Her relentless style of play and constant ability to crash the net have paid off for the winger and rewarded the Cougars with a 4-2-0 record.
Â
Benko, a fifth-year, is an Elementary Education student and a two-time Academic All-Canadian.
