MHKY: Cougars score six to beat Griffins

Bouchard records another three point game to lead Mount Royal over MacEwan

Box Score

CALGARY – Coming off a tough 3-1 loss on Friday, the Mount Royal University Cougars responded with a 6-3 victory over the MacEwan University Griffins on Saturday night at Flames Community Arena.

Despite the loss, the Griffins were first to score, breaking the ice just 71 seconds into the contest. Liam Hughes was sprung on a breakaway and beat MRU goalie Riley Sims glove-side to make it 1-0 for MacEwan.

After falling to the Griffins on Friday in Edmonton, it was not the start the Cougars were looking for.

However, the Cougars moved on quickly and piled on the pressure.

Just over halfway through the period, Mount Royal rookie Bowden Singleton whipped a turnaround wrister towards the goal and in to even the score at one.

45 seconds after Singleton tied it, Spencer Moe found himself on a breakaway of his own, making no mistake and giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead.

After 20 minutes of play, Mount Royal was dominating the Griffins, out shooting them 14-1. Although, they only had a 2-1 lead to show for it.

In the second period, the Cougars were able to keep the pace they established in the opening frame.

Teague Patton got his first of the season off an incredible no-look pass from Connor Bouchard.

Bouchard made another outstanding pass later in the period, this time finding Josh Tarzwell at the goalmouth for a powerplay goal.

Heading into the final period, the Cougars had a suffocating 4-1 lead.

But the Griffins weren't out of it yet.

Just seven seconds into the third, Liam Hughes got his second goal of the game with a howitzer of a slapshot from the high slot. Hughes took advantage of the puck sticking to the wet ice as the Cougars over skated it.

A few minutes later, the Griffins shortened the deficit to just one with a powerplay goal from Logan Dowhaniuk.

In desperate need of insurance, who else could the Cougars turn to but Connor Bouchard. After Jayden Wiens' spinning shot was saved by MacEwan netminder Zac Onyskiw, Bouchard was in the perfect spot to collect the rebound and put it in the net.

Wiens added an empty netter to put a bow on it for Mount Royal.

MRU's top line of Bouchard-Wiens-Patton was a force all night. Despite three of them being under six feet tall, they have a large presence on the ice and play a commanding style of play.

"I think we're all smart players. I think our hockey IQs mesh very, very well," said Wiens.

The trio combined for seven points on Saturday.

While satisfied with the bounceback win, the Cougars still think they can give more.

"It's a big two points. But I don't even think it was our best effort. I think we have a lot more to give," said Wiens. "Especially our third period, we took our foot off the gas a little bit and let [MacEwan] back in the game."

With the win, Wiens and the Cougars move back to .500 (3-3) with their third straight split to start the 2025-26 season.

Next weekend, they're back on the road. Mount Royal will make the trip to Winnipeg for a couple of games against divisional opponents, the Manitoba Bisons.
