WHKY: Benko scores two, Cougars shutout MacEwan

Box Score
CALGARY –  Sydney Benko's two-goal night propelled the Mount Royal University Cougars women's hockey team past the MacEwan University Griffins in a 2-0 contest at Flames Community Arena.

"I think we came out strong tonight," said Benko following the Cougars' second straight win.

After a flurry of chances to start the game for Mount Royal, the fifth-year winger got her first tally of the night halfway through the first period.

On the powerplay, Benko deflected Jori Hansen-Young's point shot to redirect the puck past Griffins netminder Lindsey Johnson.

Despite the loss, Johnson had an outstanding game between the pipes for MacEwan as she made 26 saves.

In the second period, Benko got her second of the night off an unusual bounce. Isa MacPhee's shot from the blueline hit an unsuspecting Beno cutting across the ice with the puck fluttering up and over Johnson.

"It was definitely quite lucky, but that happens sometimes," said Benko, chuckling as she recalled the unique goal. "Have to credit [Isa] MacPhee for shooting off me."

MacEwan saw the best chance to light the lamp later in the second period after they were awarded a couple of powerplay but Mount Royal held strong in the defensive zone.

MRU goaltender Scout Anderson registered her first shutout of the season and seventh of her career, stopping all five shots she faced.

Cougars' captain Kaia Borbandy had a milestone night, becoming the 20th player in program history to play 100 Canada West games. The veteran centre was a force all night and nearly found the back of the net multiple times.

Still in search of their first win of the season, MacEwan will host the Cougars on Saturday even back in Edmonton for the second half of the home-and-home.

Puck drop for Saturday's rematch is set for 5 p.m. and will be played at Downtown Community Arena.
