The Cougars men's and women's hockey teams both took on the University of Calgary this weekend, in their first editions of the Crowchild Classic. Both teams found themselves 1-1 on the weekend, and look to stay strong for the rest of the season.
Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week: Connor BouchardÂ
Connor Bouchard continued his dominance for MRU's men's hockey team this past weekend, registering a point on all four of the Cougars' goals. On Friday, Bouchard picked up the secondary assist on Mount Royal's lone goal of the game, which the Cougars ultimately lost 2-1 against the University of Calgary Dinos. In Saturday's home opener, Bouchard led the Cougars to a bounce-back effort, tallying a goal and two assists in the 3-2 victory over Calgary.
The top-line winger's performance on Saturday was his 42nd career multipoint game and 16th three-point showing. Bouchard, a fourth-year, has already cemented himself as one of the greatest players in the history of the program. He finds himself at the top multiple categories of the MRU record books, including points, assists, points per game and plus/minus. He leads the Cougars with six points through four games of the 2025-26 season.
Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week: Jerzey WatteyneÂ
Jerzey Watteyne kept up her fantastic goal-scoring pace in the weekend's series against the University of Calgary Dinos. On Friday at home, Watteyne scored the Cougars' only goal with a skillful deflection of
Allee Gerrard's point shot on the powerplay. On Saturday, Watteyne scored another powerplay goal in similar fashion to her tally on Friday.
Jori Hansen-Young's shot from the blueline was redirected by Watteyne, fooling the Dinos goaltender and giving the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the third. Mount Royal would go on to beat Calgary 2-1 to earn a split.
Watteyne's two-goal weekend gives her three total in the 2025-26 season, which ties her for first in the Canada West. It is the fourth time in the Lafleche, Sask. product's career that she has scored in both games of a weekend series. The third year forward has been one of the top goal scorers for the Cougars the past few seasons, scoring 17 in 53 career games at Mount Royal.
