Despite not playing a single game last weekend, the MRU Cougars men's and women's hockey teams placed in the top half of this week's U SPORTS Top 10 rankings. The men's team, who hold the second seed in the West division of the Canada West conference with their 17-5 record, placed fifth in this week's national rankings, while the 15-7 women's team improved one spot to match their male counterparts and place fifth.
The Cougars men's hockey team benefitted from the University of Alberta Golden Bears' pair of losses against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon as well as McGill's 1-1 weekend against Queen's and RMC. Plus, with Concordia taking a loss to Lakehead, the Cougars are just over three ELO points behind fourth place.
MRU's men's hockey team will look to advance in the U SPORTS rankings as they take on the University of Calgary Dinos in this year's Crowchild Classic on Friday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Scotiabank Saddledome and live on Canada West TV.
The Cougars women's hockey team improved from sixth to fifth without having to play any games last weekend and hold a 13-point lead in ELO over sixth place UNB, who posted a 1-1 record against St. Francis Xavier and UPEI.
