Cougars Shine at the 2025 FISU Games

Jomha, Spence, and Ross Bring Home Silver

Mount Royal University's women's hockey team was well-represented at the 2025 FISU Games in Italy, with forward Aliya Jomha, defender Alex Spence, and goalie Kaitlyn Ross playing integral roles for Team Canada. The trio showcased their skills on an international stage, helping Canada secure a silver medal after a closely contested final against Czechia.

Team Canada entered the tournament as one of the favorites, and they made a statement in their opening game against Chinese Taipei with a resounding 16-0 victory. Kaitlyn Ross earned the start in net and was flawless, stopping all seven shots she faced for a shutout win. Aliya Jomha was a force on offense, scoring two goals to contribute to the rout. Alex Spence, while not registering a point, played a critical role in Canada's defensive dominance, helping limit Chinese Taipei's offensive opportunities.

The momentum continued into the second game, where Canada overwhelmed the United Kingdom 14-0. Jomha once again showcased her offensive talents with a goal and an assist, bringing her tournament total to four points. Spence also chipped in with an assist, earning her first point of the competition. With Ross resting for this game, Canada's defense ensured another shutout, further demonstrating the depth and talent of the roster.

Canada faced a tougher test in their third preliminary game against Slovakia but emerged with a 6-2 victory. While Jomha and Spence were held off the scoresheet and Ross didn't dress, the team's resilience and depth carried them to a perfect 3-0 record in the group stage, securing their place in the semifinals.

In the semifinal matchup against Japan, Canada faced a disciplined opponent but prevailed with a 3-0 win. Spence stepped up in a big way, scoring a crucial goal to help her team advance to the gold medal game.

The gold medal game was a nail-biter against a formidable Czechia team. Canada fell 2-1 in overtime in a game marked by tight defense and stellar goaltending. Despite the loss, Canada's effort was commendable, and the silver medal was a testament to the team's hard work and determination throughout the tournament.

For Jomha, Spence, and Ross, the FISU Games were more than just a medal-winning experience; they were an opportunity to grow as players and represent their country on an international stage. Jomha finished the tournament with three goals and an assist, her offensive contributions vital in Canada's early dominance. Spence's goal in the semifinal highlighted her ability to deliver in key moments, while Ross's shutout performance in the opener set the tone for Canada's defensive excellence.

As they return to Mount Royal University, the trio brings with them not only silver medals but also invaluable experience and pride, further cementing their status as key players for the Cougars. They will return to the roster just in time for the 11th annual Crowchild Classic on January 31 as the Cougars take on the Dinos.
