The MRU Cougars men's and women's hockey teams have combined to play eight games in 2025, posting a combined record of 5-3 through those matches. Four players were selected to compete in the FISU games, including Alex Spence, Kaitlyn Ross and Aliya Jomha from the women's team and Robbie Fromm-Delorme from the men's team. Despite missing that quartet of skaters, the Cougars started the new year in the U SPORTS Top 10, with the men's team placing seventh and the women's team placing sixth in the first ranking of the new year.
The Cougars women's hockey team swept the University of Calgary Dinos on their first weekend of the new year, winning 6-2 on Friday, Jan. 3 and 1-0 on Saturday, Jan. 4. Jomha secured her first career hat trick and only the second in Cougars women's hockey history in Friday's victory while Allee Gerrard was the only skater to score on Saturday night. However, Jomha, Ross and Spence were unable to play the following week as the Cougars were swept by the UBC Thunderbirds, losing 0-5 on Friday, Jan. 10 and 1-5 on Saturday, Jan. 10.
As a result, the Cougars women's hockey team dropped two places in the first U SPORTS Top 10 rankings of 2025, placing sixth. They will look to return to the win column when they take on the MacEwan University Griffins on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. in Edmonton and live on Canada West TV.
The Cougars men's hockey team opened 2025 on a three-game win streak, scoring 18 goals combined. They started by sweeping the University of Calgary Dinos with a 7-4 victory on Friday, Jan. 3 and a 5-4 shootout win on Saturday, Jan. 4. On Friday, Jan. 10, MRU won 6-1 in Vancouver against the UBC Thunderbirds, but had their win-streak snapped as the Thunderbirds handed the Cougars a 2-5 loss on Saturday, Jan. 11.
With their 3-1 record in the new year and 15-5 regular season record, the Cougars men's hockey team moved up one place in the first U SPORTS Top 10 ranking of the new year, placing seventh. They will hope to return to their winning ways when they host the MacEwan University Griffins on Friday, Jan. 17 at Flames Community Arena and live on Canada West TV.
