Female Athlete of the Week
The MRU Cougars women's soccer team started the weekend out in British Columbia against the UFV Cascades. In the 35th minute, Cougars player
Tamara Djurisic took a corner, followed by a shot by
Catriona McFadden, but UFV's Camryn Lyon made the save. Despite a consistent effort, the Cougars lost to the Cascades 0-2 with goals by Emerson Toop and Kiana Langston.
Moving into Saturday, the Cougars took on the TWU Spartans. In the 20th minute, Cougars
Tamara Djurisic passed to teammate
Gabrielle Linford in the TWU zone and scored, bringing up the score to 1-0 for the Cougars. Just 12 minutes later, Cougars forward
Dany Juarez took a shot outside the box and scored. By the end of the first half, the score was 2-1 for the Cougars. Unfortunately, in the 90th minute, the Spartans snuck in a goal and the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
The Female Athlete of the Week is
Gabrielle Linford. From an impressive 30 feet, Linford took a shot on the right corner of the net and scored in the 20th minute, assisted by teammate
Tamara Djurisic which allowed the Cougars to lead 1-0 against the Spartans. She's been a team player this season and continues to work hard on the field.
The Cougars women's soccer takes on the UBCO Heat on Friday, Sept. 20th at 7 PM PST, as well as the TRU Wolfpack on Saturday, Sept. 21st at 8 PM PST. Fans who aren't making the drive can stream the games on Canada West TV.
Male Athlete of the Week
The MRU men's soccer team took on the TWU Spartans on Friday. There was minimal action in the first half, and a couple of scoring opportunities by Miguel da Rocha and
Finn Marshall but that shot on goal was saved by the Spartan goalie. The only goal from the Cougars came from
Skyler Rogers in the 90th minute of play. The game ended in a 1-3 loss for the Cougars.
The Cougars then took on the TRU Wolfpack last weekend. In the 64th minute of play,
Jonathan Walter scored and brought the count up to 1-0 for the Cougars. The Cougars dominated this game which ended in a 3-0 victory for the Cougars with additional goals by
Finn Marshall in the 87th minute and
Mowbray Beghin with just seconds left.
The Male Athlete of the Week is
Sjard Strauss. Cougars goalie Strauss played just one game this weekend against the TRU Wolfpack where he made 3 saves and faced 4 shots, achieving his first career shut-out. Additionally, he made a crucial save against the Wolfpack which not only proved his impressive goal-keeping but his contributions to the Cougars.
The Cougars men's soccer team will take on the UNBC Timberwolves on Friday, Sept. 20th at 5 PM MT, as well as the UVIC Vikes on Sunday, Sept. 22nd at 3 PM MT. If you can't make the game, you can catch the games on Canada West TV.
