Mount Royal University, nestled in the heart of Calgary, Alberta, is not only known for its academic excellence but also for fostering a diverse and inclusive community. A major part of Cougars Athletics and Recreation involves our Cougars Athlete Board, who are tasked with improving the student-athlete experience here at MRU. Amongst members on that board sits Ethan Keen who is a standout defenseman on the men's soccer team majoring in Business.

Ethan's journey in soccer began at a tender age, and his passion for the sport has only grown stronger over the years. Recalling his early memories, Ethan shared, "I started playing soccer when I was probably 3 or 4 years old. I scored ten goals in one game in U4 soccer, and that's when I knew soccer was the sport for me."

His journey took a remarkable turn when he scored the game-winning goal in the Canada West Championship, etching his name in the university's sports history. However, Ethan's accomplishments extend beyond the field. He is a recipient of the Black North Initiative Bursary under the Athletes on Track Program, a groundbreaking initiative launched by U SPORTS in partnership with the BlackNorth Initiative (BNI).

The Athletes on Track program aims to provide financial support and mentorship opportunities for Black student-athletes, addressing systemic barriers in their personal and professional development. Ethan, alongside seven other Black student-athletes, received a $5,000 bursary and access to mentorship through the BlackNorth Connect Program.

Ethan is not only a talented athlete but also an advocate for inclusivity in sports. When asked about the inclusivity of soccer, he expressed, "Soccer is a very inclusive sport. It's financially accessible, and our team here reflects the diversity of backgrounds, cultures, and religions. It's a sport where people from different walks of life come together."

As a recipient of the Black North Initiative Bursary, Ethan has actively contributed to the community. He shared, "Our coach, Ryan, emphasizes the importance of giving back. We've been involved in community initiatives, including organizing drop-in games for refugees at the Genesis Center. It's about being role models and making a positive impact on the lives of others."

Ethan's heritage, stemming from his Jamaican roots, plays a significant role in shaping his identity. He spoke passionately about his culture, highlighting the importance of Jamaican cuisine and music. "My mom's Jamaican, and the food and music are integral parts of my culture. It makes me appreciate my heritage and understand where I come from," he shared.

Having visited Jamaica several times, Ethan described the unique experiences of life on a farm, emphasizing the simplicity and joy of outdoor activities that are less reliant on technology. "It's a different lifestyle, and it makes me value the simple pleasures of life," he added.

Addressing the broader issue of representation in sports, Ethan acknowledged that while progress has been made, financial barriers remain for many aspiring athletes. "Representation is good, but financial challenges persist, especially for those who don't come from established backgrounds. Access to quality coaching and programs can be a hurdle," he explained.

In offering advice to fellow Black athletes aspiring to follow in his footsteps, Ethan emphasized resilience. "Don't give up. Persevere through challenges and rejections. Some of my lowest moments in sports have shaped me the most. Pushing through tough times is where you make the most impact and change," he advised.

When asked about his fondest soccer memory, Ethan pointed to his recent game-winning goal in the Canada West Championship. However, he also reminisced about playing against Chelsea's academy team in England and participating in matches in Germany. These experiences, coupled with his passion for the game, have shaped Ethan's remarkable journey in soccer.

Ethan Keen stands as a testament to the power of perseverance, diversity, and inclusion in the world of sports. As Mount Royal University celebrates Black History Month, Ethan's story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes and a reminder of the strides being made toward a more inclusive and equitable sporting landscape.
