MHKY: Cougars suffer similar fate to UBC to lose third in a row

Box Score CALGARY – The MRU Cougars men's hockey team will want to forget about these two games against UBC.

The Cougars fell to the Thunderbirds 5-2 on Saturday evening, marking their third straight loss.

Although Mount Royal dominated the puck possession battle in the first, UBC came away with the lead after 20 minutes.

MRU's Connor Poffenroth bobbled the puck at the point, allowing Thunderbird forward Jacob Wright to pounce on it and head in on goaltender Shane Farkas all alone. MRU's defence hustled to get back to contest the shot but Wright quickly shot the puck at the perfect time to beat Farkas.

The Cougars had a few significant chances but ultimately could not get the right shot to beat UBC netminder Cole Schwebius, who was making his second straight start.

With just over five minutes left in the opening period, UBC lit the lamp again. Carson Latimer's cross-ice pass hit a skate in the high slot, putting the puck on a platter for Johnny Lambos. The defenceman from Winnipeg put his full power into a slapshot, lasering the puck past the blocker of Farkas to make it 2-0 heading into the intermission.

Reminiscent of Friday night's tilt, the Thunderbirds kept adding to their lead on the scoreboard.

A Cougar turnover on the half wall gave UBC forward Ty Thorpe a point-blank opportunity and the second year quickly fired the puck between Farkas' legs to make it 3-0.

Two minutes later, Josh Williams got his second marker of the weekend bringing the Thunderbird lead to four and ending Shane Farkas' night.

Riley Sims came into the game to relieve Farkas for the second straight night.

The second period became mired in penalties, resulting in each team exchanging powerplay attempts. The two Canada West teams combined for 54 total penalty minutes including 28 in the second period.

Mount Royal finally found twin while on a two-man advantage. Former Flin Flon Bomber Justin Lies scored his sixth of the year with a well-executed one-timer.

In the third, UBC restored their four-goal cushion. Ty Thorpe got his second of the game to make it 5-1.

The Cougars continued to push back against the T-Birds but the hockey gods were not on their side. MRU struggled to convert on their chances and missed the net more than they would want to.

MRU added a second goal partway through the third. Dawson Milliken tallied his first goal of the year, assisted by Robbie Anhorn. The helper was Anhorn's first career Canada West point.

The last-ditch effort from Mount Royal would not be enough as UBC cruised to another 5-2 win at Flames Community Arenas.

A banged-up Cougars roster will move on to next weekend when they visit the University of Manitoba Bisons in Winnipeg.
