With both teams posting 7-1-0 records on the season so far, the MRU Cougars hockey teams have comfortably entrenched themselves into the U SPORTS Top 10 for yet another week. An ELO rating of 1707.26 helped the men's hockey team stay in fourth while the women's team's 1711.66 ELO kept them in third.
Â
The men's team split their weekend series against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon. On Friday, the Cougars earned their seventh consecutive victory by a margin of 4-0, thanks to goals from Justin Lies, Robbie Fromm-Delorme, Josh Tarzwell, and Spencer Moe. Lies also made an appearance on the assist column, along with Clay Hanus, Connor Bouchard, Remy Aquilon, and Tristan Zandee.
Â
However, all good things must come to an end, including the Cougars' win streak as they suffered their first lost of the season by a 4-3 scoreline on Saturday night. Hanus earned another assist in the match, along with Jayden Wiens, Connor Poffenroth and Michael Ladyman. Aquilon followed his one-assist performance on Friday night by scoring a goal on Saturday, joining Leith Olafson and Robbie Holmes to make up MRU's three goals on the night.
Â
The women's team swept their weekend with two consecutive victories as they hosted the Huskies. Their Friday night win came in the form of a nailbiting overtime match; neither team scored in the first two periods but traded a goal apiece in the third, with Jerzey Watteyne scoring the game-tying goal with 11 minutes left in the game. Four minutes into a hard-fought overtime period, Aliya Jomha scored the game-winner and the Cougars walked off the ice with a 2-1 victory.
Â
That win gave the Cougars momentum on Saturday, helping them secure a dominant 4-1 victory. Jomha scored her second goal of the weekend, with the other three goals coming from Lyndsey Janes, Summer Fomradas and Jori Hansen-Young. With their two victories, the women's hockey team extended their win streak to three consecutive games.
Â
The Cougars will return to the ice on Nov. 8 as they take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds for their second weekend series of the season. The Thunderbirds will be hungry for revenge as both MRU hockey teams swept both UBC teams in their earlier matchup in October. The men's team will be in Vancouver for their Friday night matchup, playing at 8 p.m. while the women's team will host the Thunderbirds at Flames Community Arena at 7 p.m. Both games will also be broadcast live on Canada West TV.
