The Cougars' best performances came on the road last weekend as the women's hockey team and men's basketball team both saw standout showings from key players on their roster. Check out who took home Players Bench Athlete of the Week honours as the Cougars posted a 7-5 record across the weekend.
Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week: Lyndsey Janes (WHKY)
The Cougars women's hockey team were away from home for both of their games last weekend as they traveled to Langley, B.C. to take on the Trinity Western University Spartans. Three skaters scored in MRU's 3-2 win on Friday, but only Lyndsey Janes found the back of the net on Saturday night, potting home both of her team's goals in the Cougars' 2-1 win.
Â
Janes was the only player on either side to score in the first period, spinning as she received a brilliant pass from Alexandria Spence and scoring around her defender with ease. Her second goal came in the second period as the Cougars applied serious pressure on the TWU net. Keeping the puck in the offensive zone for almost a full minute straight, MRU registered shot after shot. Janes cleaned up one of the rebounds and backhanded it past the goal line for her second goal of the game, giving the Cougars a commanding 2-0 lead.
Â
The Spartans scored in the third period, but because Janes had given her team the two-goal cushion, MRU confidently held on to the lead and won 2-1, improving to 10-4 on the season.
Â
The Cougars women's hockey team will travel to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta Pandas on Friday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Clare Drake Arena and live on Canada West TV.

Players Bench Male Athlete of the Week: Keivonte Watts (MBB)
Keivonte Watts was a man possessed over the weekend, dropping 49 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists as the Cougars men's basketball team became the only school to defeat the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns this season.Â
Â
Friday night was a tough loss for MRU to take as Lethbridge lit the nets on fire in the second half. Despite holding a 14-point advantage in the first half, the Cougars could not stop the Pronghorns in the final two quarters as Lethbridge exacted a 63-28 run to secure the win. That being said, they had no answer for Watts defensively, who racked up a team-high 22 points, along with three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the Cougars' 67-88 loss.
Â
Saturday night looked like it was going to be another tough night for MRU as they fell behind early. Lethbridge opened the game with a 24-16 run in the first quarter, but could not outscore the Cougars in any quarter for the rest of the match. MRU tied Lethbridge in scoring in the second and third quarters with 31 points across the two periods. Fortunately for MRU, Watts woke up in the fourth quarter and absolutely took over the game.
Â
Watts scored nine points in the fourth quarter, including two buckets in the paint against pressuring defense and five made free throws; he was a maestro with the ball, assisting on three of his team's baskets in their 25-9 game-closing run. His defense was suffocating as he picked up a steal in the final period of play, helping MRU hand Lethbridge their first loss of the season.
Â
By the end of the game, Watts led all players on both teams in points (27) and led his team in assists (4), rebounds (8), and free throws (11-12) to help the Cougars pull out a 72-64 win away from home.
