Three wins and one loss between the two Cougars hockey teams kept them in the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings this week. The men's team earned two wins on the road against the University of Manitoba Bisons, totalling eight goals over the weekend while the women's team split their home series and scored nine times.
Dawson Miliken,
Justin Lies,
Remy Aquilon, and
Spencer Moe all picked up goals in the men's Friday night 4-1 victory in Winnipeg, while Saturday saw Robert Anhorn,
Connor Bouchard,
Clay Hanus, and
Josh Tarzwell enter the scoring column on the Cougars' way to a 4-3 victory. That helped MRU retain the eighth spot in this week's U SPORTS Top 10 rankings for men's hockey, staying narrowly ahead of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies and tying the 11-3 Queen's University Gaels in ELO.
The women's hockey team opened up their home weekend with a banger against the Bisons, winning by a commanding 7-0 scoreline.
Allee Gerrard,
Jerzey Watteyne, and
Aliya Jomha all scored a goal apiece, while
Athena Hauck and
Jordyn Hutt both scored a pair.
Kaitlyn Ross couldn't be beat, shutting out the Bisons with 13 saves on the night. However, the Cougars could not carry that momentum with them on Saturday night as Manitoba handed MRU a 2-3 overtime loss. Hauck and
Jordyn Rivett were able to score in the loss, but the Cougars' 1-1 weekend dropped them from fifth to third in this week's U SPORTS Top 10 rankings.
