Cougars Catchup: November 18th, 2024

Only one Cougars team played on the road last weekend as the men's hockey squad travelled to Winnipeg to face the University of Manitoba Bisons. In their first weekend matchup of the season, MRU proved to be the dominant team, picking up a pair of wins away from home. Find out how the Cougars were able to end their losing streak and score eight goals in two games below.

MHKY: Friday, Nov. 15 vs University of Manitoba Bisons

The Cougars tasted victory for the first time in three games as they beat the University of Manitoba Bisons 4-3 in Winnipeg. Despite scoring the first three goals of the game, MRU had to fight hard to earn this win.

The Cougars owned the first period, with Robert Anhorn taking first blood just two minutes into the game. Connor Bouchard soon followed and potted home the second goal of the game just five minutes later. Bouchard also picked up an assist on Clay Hanus's goal with just 11 seconds left in the period and after the first 20 minutes of action, MRU was in the driver's seat of a commanding 3-0 lead.

However, the Bisons would not take this barrage lying down in front of their home fans and drew a tripping penalty on Kurtis Smythe just two minutes into the second period. Manitoba's Jonny Hooker found the back of the net with only 21 seconds left on the powerplay and made it a 3-1 game. Bouchard picked up his third point of the night as he assisted on a Josh Tarzwell goal 10 minutes later, but Bisons forward Grady Lane responded with two minutes left in the period and after the first 40 minutes of action, MRU held a 4-2 advantage on the scoreboard.

The third-period was a gritty battle, with the only goal of the period being scored by Manitoba's Hayden Ostir four minutes in. With the score at 4-3, both teams battled for control of the game, but the Cougars held solid and earned their eighth win of the season, ending their three-game losing streak with a hard-fought victory on the road. Their brilliant offensive performance forced Bisons goaltender Braden Holt to save 38 shots, while Cougars goaltender Shane Farkas chipped in 27 saves himself.

MHKY: Saturday, Nov. 16 vs University of Manitoba Bisons

MRU skated into the Wayne Fleming Arena on Saturday night with only one goal in mind: starting a new winning streak. After their win on Friday night, the boys were feeling confident in themselves once again and it showed, as they completed the weekend sweep with a dominant 4-1 victory in Winnipeg.

Dawson Miliken opened the scoring tab for MRU, picking up his second goal of the season and the only goal of the first period 10 minutes into the game. The Bisons responded at the start of the second period, drawing three penalties. Jonny Hooker scored on Manitoba's second powerplay of the game and the teams marched back into their locker rooms at the end of the second period in a 1-1 standoff.

MRU owned the third period, scoring three goals in the final 20 minutes. Justin Lies scored on the first Cougars' powerplay of the period just two minutes into the third period and Remy Aquilon and Spencer Moe each picked up five-on-five goals. As time waned down, the Cougars cruised their way to a 4-1 victory and began a new winning streak with their road sweep of the Bisons. The Cougars defense was suffocating to say the least, as goaltender Riley Sims only had to make 13 saves on the night. MRU's offense continued their hot shooting, putting 54 shots on net and forcing Manitoba netminder Kolby Thornton to make 50 saves.

The Cougars men's hockey team will look to pick up their third consecutive win as they return home on Friday, Nov. 22 to host the Trinity Western University Spartans at 7 p.m. at Flames Community Arena and live on Canada West TV.
