Despite taking four losses between their two teams, the MRU Cougars remained in the Top 10 of U SPORTS national rankings. With both squads battling the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, the women's team held on to their third-place ranking while the men's team dropped from fourth place to eighth.
Â
The Cougars' women's hockey team travelled to Vancouver to take on the Thunderbirds on Friday night and, thanks to Jerzey Watteyne, scored first in the game. However, that would be their only goal of the night as UBC went on to score two goals in the second period and a dagger in the third, handing MRU a 1-3 loss.
Â
Saturday night gave fans a much closer battle; goals from Jori Hansen-Young and Lyvia Butz helped the Cougars keep the game tied 2-2 until the final whistle. With no goals scored in overtime, the two teams entered a shootout, where UBC's Grace Elliot scored the game-deciding goal and handed the Cougars their second consecutive loss.
Â
The Cougars women's hockey team will look to end their longest losing streak of the season when they host the University of Manitoba Bisons at Flames Community Arena and live on Canada West TV on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.
Â
The MRU men's hockey team played at home last weekend but took two losses to UBC and extended their losing streak to three consecutive games. They conceded four unanswered goals on Friday night before Tim Gould and Clay Hanus could put goals on the board, but it wasn't enough as the Thunderbirds' Josh Williams scored late in the third period and handed the Cougars the first of their two 5-2 losses.Â
Â
UBC opened Saturday night on fire once again, scoring the first four goals of the game unimpeded. Justin Lies's second period goal made it 4-1, but as both teams exchanged a goal apiece in the third period, with MRU's Dawson Milliken scoring his first of the season, the Cougars lost 5-2 once again and ended their weekend without a win.
Â
The Cougars men's hockey team will look to return to the win column when they take on the University of Manitoba Bisons on Friday, Nov. 15 at 6 p.m. in Winnipeg and live on Canada West TV.
