Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week - Jerzey Watteyne
The Cougars women's hockey team faced off their season with fervor as they took home two consecutive shutout victories against the Trinity Western University Spartans, winning the season opener 2-0 on Friday and following that up with a 4-0 domination on Saturday.Â
Jerzey Watteyne earned Female Athlete of the Week honours after tallying two goals over the weekend. Watteyne's relentless aggression was impossible to miss on the ice as she attempted seven shots and registered a +3 in +/-.Â
Her first goal came late in the Friday night matchup as she scored easily on the breakout, sneaking behind the defense on a three-on-two opportunity and burying the shot off of a perfect pass from
Athena Hauck. Hauck would also provide the assist on Watteyne's second goal of the season, which came midway through the first period of the Cougars' Saturday night rout of the Spartans.
Watteyne, now in her second year, continues to prove doubters wrong with incredible on-ice performances and looks to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump on her way to helping this Cougars team return to championship contention. Fans can tune in on
Canada West TV on Oct. 11 at 8 P.M. as the Cougars look to keep their win streak alive against the UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver, B.C.
Player Bench Male Athlete of the Week - Justin Lies
Not to be outdone by the brilliance of the women's hockey team, the men's squad opened their season with a pair of entries in the win column, posting identical scorelines of 6-3 in both games.
Justin Lies took home Male Athlete of the Week after he displayed flawless playmaking, contributing two goals and four assists in the Cougars' display of dominance on the road in Langley.
On Friday, Lies registered three assists, spoonfeeding the perfect pass to point-man
Clay Hanus, who buried an absolute rocket of a shot past Leon Summer to secure the team's first powerplay goal of the year. Goals fromÂ
Lies decided to turn up to the temperature on Saturday as he scored the first goal of the game in the seventh minute of action, deflecting a shot-pass from
Robbie Fromm-Delorme into the back of the net. Hanus linked up with Lies for his second goal of the game on a second-period powerplay goal as the defenseman teed Lies up for an absolute blur of a slapshot that tied the game at 2-2. Lies also racked up an assist as he fed superstar scorer
Connor Bouchard in motion, who proceeded to break ankles on his way to the Cougars' fourth goal of the game.
Lies hopes to keep his fiery streak rolling as the Cougars return home to Flames Community Arena and host the UBC Thunderbirds on Oct. 11 at 7 P.M., which will also be available to watch live on
Canada West TV.
