Cougars Catchup: October 7th, 2024

This past weekend the Cougars men's hockey team and women's soccer team were both on the road in BC.

MHKY: October 4th vs Trinity Western Spartans

The Mount Royal Cougars delivered a commanding performance in their season opener, defeating the Trinity Western Spartans 6-3.

Trinity Western struck first, with Skyler Cameron scoring on the power play just 2:30 into the opening period. The Cougars quickly answered, as Jaxon Martens tied the game at 9 minutes. Clay Hanus gave MRU the lead 11 minutes in with a power play goal, and Zafir Rawji added to the advantage, scoring with just seven seconds left in the first period to make it 3-1.

The Cougars continued their dominance in the second period, with Robbie Fromm-Delorme netting another power play goal 4 minutes in, extending the lead to 4-1. Trinity Western managed to cut into the lead with a goal by Christian Lowe at 12 minute mark but MRU struck again, as Tristan Zandee scored on the power play to push the Cougars ahead 5-2.

In the third period, Jonathan Krahn scored early for TWU, but MRU held firm. Fromm-Delorme capped off the win with an empty-net goal, securing a decisive 6-3 victory for the Cougars. Fromm-Delorme's two-goal performance was key in Mount Royal's strong offensive display.

WSOC: October 5th vs UBC Thunderbirds

The Mount Royal Cougars fell 3-0 to the UBC Thunderbirds in a tough road match. UBC struck early, with Sienna Gibson scoring just two minutes into the game. Despite some early pressure from the Thunderbirds, MRU's defense managed to keep the scoreline close throughout the first half.

UBC continued to control possession in the second half, creating multiple scoring opportunities. In the 73rd minute, Jade Taylor-Ryan doubled UBC's lead, finishing a setup from Olivia Gomez. Taylor-Ryan struck again in the 80th minute, putting UBC up 3-0 and sealing the result.

Mount Royal struggled to generate offensive chances, managing just six shots throughout the match, with only three on target. UBC outshot MRU 24-6, and Ella Filek made ten saves to keep the Cougars in the game.

Despite the loss, the Cougars showed resilience, particularly in the first half, but UBC's attacking pressure ultimately proved too much to handle.

MHKY: October 5th vs Trinity Western Spartans

The Mount Royal Cougars secured a 6-3 victory over the Trinity Western Spartans, powered by a strong third period. MRU took an early lead in the first period when Justin Lies scored at 7:38. However, Trinity Western responded quickly, tying the game 9 minutes in on a power play goal by Jonathan Krahn.

In the second period, TWU grabbed the lead at a minute in when Samuel May found the back of the net. The Cougars bounced back, with Lies scoring his second goal of the night on the power play at the 7 minute mark, leveling the score at 2-2. Just a few minutes later, Josh Tarzwell gave MRU a 3-2 advantage.

The Spartans struck again early in the third, with Luke Spadafora tying the game at 3-3. The game remained deadlocked until Connor Bouchard put MRU back in front. As the clock wound down, Tim Gould sealed the win for the Cougars with two empty-net goals, the first coming at 18:38 and the second just under a minute later.

The Cougars' balanced attack and strong finish allowed them to prevail in a hard-fought contest, securing the weekend sweep.

WSOC: October 6th vs UNBC Timberwolves

The Mount Royal Cougars secured a 1-0 victory over the UNBC Timberwolves, thanks to a first-half goal by Tamara Djurisic. Djurisic found the back of the net in the 22nd minute, finishing off a setup from Siddaly Alcock to give the Cougars the lead. This marked Djurisic's third goal of the season, providing the only goal in a tightly contested match.

Mount Royal dominated possession and created numerous scoring chances throughout the game, registering 19 shots with 13 on target. UNBC struggled to generate offense, managing just four shots, two of which were on target, as the Cougars' defense remained solid.

Despite the Timberwolves' attempts to find an equalizer, Mount Royal's goalkeeper Ella Filek had little trouble, making two routine saves to preserve the clean sheet. UNBC's defense, led by a busy goalkeeper who made 12 saves, kept the game close, but the Timberwolves were unable to capitalize on their limited opportunities.

Both teams played physically, with each committing 16 fouls, but neither side picked up any cautions. Mount Royal's constant pressure, including eight corner kicks, kept UNBC on the back foot for most of the match as the Cougars claimed a well-deserved 1-0 win.
