Box Score
Calgary, ALTA – With cooler temperatures today, The Cougars men's soccer team hosted the MacEwan Griffins for their final regular season home game.
In the 2nd minute of the game, The Griffins wasted no time and Felix Guite took an early shot on Cougars goalie
Sjard Strauss but took it too wide of the left side of the net.
In the seventh minute,
Ethan Keen had an opportunity at the net but the Griffins' goalie David Sithole stopped the shot. Almost immediately after,
Joshua Flaksman had a chance from the ricochet from Sithole's hands. Neither Cougars players were able to create a lead in the score.
In the 11th minute,
Jonathan Walter had a short free kick that was sent towards the net. Headed by
Alex Kemsley, the ball bounced out of the Griffins' goalie's hands to allow
Miguel Da Rocha to quickly put the Cougars on the scoreboard.
The Cougars established high energy thanks to Da Rocha' early goal which would lead to another goal in the first half.
Hyunsoo Ryu sent a deep through ball to
Finn Marshall where he would tap the ball into the net, now leading 2-0 for the Cougars.
The first card of the game was issued in the 17th minute as Flaksman faked around a Griffins defender as he had a clear path on goal before being taken out from behind by Phillip Wutzl, resulting in an immediate red card against the Griffins. This would leave the Griffins having to play one less player for the rest of the game.
During an error of communication,
Finn Marshall capitalized on his second chance of another goal. By adding pressure to Griffins' defenders and goalie, he beat Sithole to the ball and sent the ball soaring into the back of the net.
Flaksman had a defender one-on-one down by the net before skipping a pass to Da Rocha that was briefly intercepted by goaltender Sithole. However, Sithole lost where the ball was, leaving Da Rocha to quickly put the Cougars up 4-0, marking his second goal. Immediately after, The Griffins made a goalie substitution, checking in Kaleb Lutz into the game.
As the second half kicked off, the Cougars had
Ruben Koudelka,
Mowbray Beghin, and
Bwidju Mutongolo enter the game, allowing Kemsley, Da Rocha, and Flaksman to take a rest during this match-up.
During the 58th minute, Mutongolo and Keen made a fast break towards Lutz. Keen skipped a fast pass to Mutongolo but it was a touch too far for Mutongolo to maintain possession.
Throughout the second half, The Cougars continued to let their substitutes earn some time on the field. There were several shots made on the Griffins net but nothing that would extend the Cougars' 4-0 lead. As the final minute approached,
Skyler Rogers was handed a yellow card after a rough collision with another Griffins player. This would mark one of the last plays in this game as the refs let the Griffins have one more shot at the net before blowing the final three whistles.
The final score was 4-0 for the Cougars.
Thanks to his two goals in a dominant performance by the MRU Cougars,
Finn Marshall earned Player of the Game for his contributions for today's match.
The Cougars will be back in action on October 18th at 6PM MDT against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Saskatoon, SK.
