Box Score What's better than a shutout? Two shutouts.
The MRU Cougars women's hockey team claimed their second win of the weekend, defeating the Trinity Western University Spartans 4-0 on Saturday.
Scout Anderson was given the nod to start between the pipes for Mount Royal and was tested early. Anderson rose to the moment with a terrific glove save, robbing the Spartans of a goal.
The Cougars went on a powerplay and lit the lamp shortly after Anderson's save. After being held off the scoresheet in Friday's affair despite numerous chances,
Aliya Jomha found the back of the net for her first of the season.
"It's always nice to get the first one out of the way," said Jomha. "It started the momentum for the rest of the game and was important for our whole group."
Despite going down early, Trinity Western came out with an abundance of energy compared to Friday's game. The Spartans prioritized getting shots to the net, hoping one would get past
Scout Anderson. The two Canada West sides were even in shots through most of the game, a major difference from the season opener where Mount Royal dominated the shot tally.
Later in the period, the Cougars doubled up their lead.
Athena Hauck found
Jerzey Watteyne in front for a tap-in goal past the blocker of Spartans netminder Kate Fawcett. The goal would be Watteyne's second of the weekend. Mount Royal's high-powered line with Watteyne and Hauck flanking centre
Kiana McNinch has already proved one of the most dangerous trios in the Canada West conference.
The tally would mark the end of Fawcett's night in the crease with Spartans head coach Peter Hay electing to send Mabel Maltais out to replace Fawcett for the rest of the game.
With a few minutes left in the opening frame, Second-year winger
Ashley Grice would 'wow' the Flames Community Arena crowd with an outstanding goal. Grice swiftly dragged the puck to her backhand around the Spartans' defence and roofed a shot over the shoulder of Maltais. The finest play of the evening would be Grice's first career goal in Canada West play.
Mount Royal took a 3-0 cushion into the final 20 minutes, looking to wrap up a triumphant opening weekend.
Trinity Western successfully killed off a four-minute penalty, giving them some hope to stay in the game and mount a comeback. However, the Cougars put the clamps on in the defensive zone and kept the Spartans to the outside of the ice.
MRU forward
Julia Duke would add a fourth goal partway through the third, pushing the game out of reach for the Spartans.
Scout Anderson would go on to secure her fifth career Canada West shutout in just 11 total games played. The Saskatoon product has spent most of her Cougars' tenure backing up
Kaitlyn Ross and has been incredibly reliable for MRU, sporting a career 1.45 goals against average and a .928 save percentage.
Aliya Jomha recognized how important it is to have two exceptional goaltenders and its importance to the entire squad.
"It speaks to our depth as a group to have a great back end, four lines and excellent goaltending," said Jomha. "It sparks a lot of confidence for our entire team and plays a big part in winning."
Johma and the Cougars will take their 2-0 record into next weekend when they visit the defending Canada West champion UBC Thunderbirds in Vancouver. The games can be streamed live on Canada West TV.
