Players Bench Female Athlete of the Week - Aliya Jomha
The Cougars women's hockey team took on the Saskatchewan Huskies this past weekend after last week's Crowchild Classic clash. The Cougars looked fantastic taking home game one 2-1 on Friday and game two 4-1.
Aliya Jomha earned Female Athlete of the Week honours after tallying two goals over the weekend. Jomha was a key player in the Cougars sweep this past weekend, especially being the hero on Friday night at FCA.
Her first goal of the weekend was a big one. After 60 minutes of play, the Cougars and Huskies found themselves headed to overtime. With 47 seconds left,
Athena Hauck would head down the left side of the rink, saucing a pass through three Huskies defenders to find Jomha. She found herself one-on-one with the goalie and picked her spot perfectly taking home the win.
Jomha, now in her fourth year, continues to be a great leader for the Cougars women's hockey team, helping them earn the rank of number three in the nation. The Cougars will have a bye week but will return to Vancouver on Nov. 8-9 and look to sweep the UBC Thunderbirds again. You can tune in live on Canada West TV.
Player Bench Male Athlete of the Week - Jonathan Walter
The Cougars men's soccer team entered the playoffs this past weekend in Edmonton. After finishing as the three seed in the Prarie Division the Cougars went on to take down the Vikes 2-1 in the quarter-final, and the Golden Bears 1-0 in the semifinal to return back to the Canada West championship.
Jonathan Walter took home Male Athlete of the Week after scoring the biggest goal of his career on Sunday afternoon, propelling the Cougars back to the promised land.
In the 89th minute of the semifinals, Walter would get fouled just outside the box giving the Cougars a free kick. The Golden Bears went on to stack the box, having all 11 players inside, trying to provide the least amount of space possible, but it wasn't enough. Walter would strike a low-driven shot into the bottom right corner, in the dying minutes, which would end up being the winner.
Walter and the Cougars will look to repeat history this Friday, Nov. 1 at 8 pm as they take on the UBC Thunderbirds in a rematch of the 2023 Canada West championship. You can watch the game live on Canada West TV.
