CALGARY – The Mount Royal University Cougars women's hockey team completed the weekend sweep over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a 4-1 victory to stay undefeated on home ice.Â
Mount Royal head coach
Scott Rivett and Saskatchewan coach Steve Kook each decided to start a different goalie for Saturday's game. The Cougars gave second-year netminder
Kate Holan her first career Canada West start while the Huskies turned to rookie Clara Juca for her second league appearance.Â
Holan's initial test came late in the first when she made a solid pad save, stopping Huskies defender Jacquelyne Chief.
It took until the third period in the weekend opener for either team to score but in Saturday's rematch, the game's first tally came a lot quicker.
After missing Friday's game, Cougars' captain
Lyndsey Janes lit the lamp for the home team.
Athena Hauck intelligently ensured the play was onside before entering the zone, lost and regained possession of the puck to then slide a backhand pass to Janes who ripped a shot past Juca.Â
MRU took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Already down a skater early in the second, Mount Royal was caught on an ill-timed change, propelling Huskies forward Jayde Cadieux to a breakaway. Cadieux was unable to score on the play but drew a slashing call on the play to give Saskatchewan an early 5-on-3.Â
Nevertheless, MRU's league-best penalty kill (97.6%) successfully erased the Huskies advantage. Although the Cougars have taken the most penalties in the Canada West with 42, they have only allowed a single powerplay goal this season.
A few minutes later, the Cougars extended their lead on the Huskies. While on a powerplay of their own,
Aliya Jomha swiftly weaved through the Saskatchewan defence and shot the puck through the five-hole of Juca to make it 2-0. Jomha's spectacular individual effort was her 26th career marker, tying her with
Breanne Trotter for Mount Royal's all-time record for goals.
Saskatchewan was able to cut the deficit back to one halfway through the second. Rookie defenceman Avery Gottselig's point shot was skillfully deflected out of mid-air by Bronwyn Boucher, redirecting the puck to find the bottom right corner of the net.Â
With half the game left to play, the underdog Huskies positioned themselves to compete to the final buzzer.
However, MRU restored their two-goal cushion in the final few minutes of an action-packed second period. Just seconds after she was robbed by Juca on the powerplay, Cougars defenceman
Summer Fomradas rifled a hard point shot through traffic to beat the Huskies netminder blocker-side for her first career Canada West goal.
Kate Holan safeguarded the Cougars' lead in the dying seconds of the period by making a sprawling save on Bronwyn Boucher, who was close to notching her second of the game.Â
MRU added one more insurance goal in the third.
Jori Hansen-Young showed off her cannon of a shot from the point. Her booming slapshot found its path through a crowd, all the way to the back of the net to solidify the game for the Cougars.Â
Athena Hauck was the player of the game for Mount Royal as she recorded three helpers to bring her point total to eight. Holan stopped 21 shots for the win in her first career game.
The Cougars will now head into their bye week atop the overall Canada West standings with a 7-1-0 record while the Huskies will look for their first win of the season when they host the Manitoba Bisons.
