Box Score The Mount Royal University Cougars men's hockey team moved to 5-0 after a convincing 4-1 win over a shorthanded University of Calgary Dinos squad on Friday night.
Early in the contest, each side traded grade-A chances.
Rookie centre
Jayden Wiens nearly split the Calgary defence but could not control the puck in tight and ended up crashing into the net.
Carter Massier picked up the puck from an MRU turnover and kept his feet moving on a rush to draw a holding call. On the ensuing man advantage, Calgary rang a shot off the crossbar and out. The Dinos have struggled on the powerplay this season, converting on only 11.5% of their opportunities to rank them last in the league.Â
With under five minutes to go in the opening frame, the Cougars' league-best powerplay went to work after Logen Hammett took a two-minute head contact penalty.
Halfway through the advantage,
Jayden Wiens found space with the puck low in the offensive zone, drawing all the attention of the Dinos' players. Wiens fed a cross-ice pass to a wide-open
Kyle Walker who perfectly fired a hard one-time slapshot past the pad of Calgary netminder Carl Tetachuk.Â
Converting for the 12th time this year while on the powerplay, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Mount Royal carried the momentum in the second period and extended their lead just 73 seconds after hitting the ice.Â
Marking his name on the scoresheet with an outstanding pass in the first,
Jayden Wiens got a goal of his own.
Clay Hanus attempted to feed a pass to
Connor Bouchard who was stationed on the opposite side of the ice. However, Wiens cut off Hanus' with his foot and shot a laser past Tetachuk. Bouchard quickly went to retrieve the puck to commemorate Wiens' first Canada West goal.
After a long road back to the ice while recovering and rehabbing from injury, Wiens was relieved to get his first goal in Cougar uniform.
"I don't even know who passed it to me. I actually think it was meant for [Connor] Bouchard," said Wiens while recounting his goal. "I managed to get it over his glove. It was kind of relief.Â
Mount Royal held the two-goal cushion until just past the midway point of the period. Dinos' veteran forward star Colson Gengenbach displayed an impressive individual effort, deking his way through the Cougars players before moving the puck to his backhand and swiftly sliding it under MRU goalie
Shane Farkas.Â
After 40 minutes of tight and intense hockey, just one goal separated the two teams.
In the final period, the Cougars regained their two-goal lead. Defenceman
Michael Ladyman took an aggressive hit from Dinos forward Logan Hauer but still got the pass off to Remy Aqulion who put it deep behind the net.
Zafir Rawji snatched up the puck and eventually found
Tristan Zandee in the slot. Zandee, a second-year centre one-timed Rawji's pass, beating Carl Tetachuk and finding twine.
59 seconds after Zandee's second tally of the year, Mount Royal stumbled their way into a fourth goal. While falling to the ice,
Robbie Fromm-Delorme relinquished control of the puck leaving
Justin Lies to shoot it. Lies also found his legs being taken out but still managed to beat Tetachuk for his team-high fourth of the season.
Shane Farkas was stellar between the pipes in his second start of the season for MRU and carried the Cougars to their fifth win of the season. While already rolling, Mount Royal is even stronger with Farkas as their last line of defence.Â
"He really settled in the third period last weekend in the third period against UBC and today made some key saves," said Cougars head coach
Bert Gilling.Â
In less than 24 hours, the two Cowtown squads will face off again. The Dinos will get set to host the Cougars at Father David Bauer Arena for the rematch. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and can be streamed live on
Canada West TV.
