Both of the Mount Royal University Cougars hockey teams have started their seasons on high notes as they pushed their win-streak to four consecutive games. As a result of their rampant success, the men's hockey team were ranked third in the country, while the women's squad one-upped their counterparts by ranking second.
The men's team celebrated a victorious home-opening weekend as they swept the defending Canada West Champions, the UBC Thunderbirds, with a pair of 4-3 victories on Friday, Oct. 11 and Saturday, Oct. 12.
Clay Hanus was selected as Players Bench Athlete of the Week after tallying two goals and three assists in the Cougars' successful Thanksgiving weekend.
They look to sweep a third consecutive weekend as they face the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday, Oct. 18 at Flames Community Arena and Saturday, Oct. 19 at Father David Bauer Arena. Both Crowchild Classic games take place at 7 P.M. and will also be broadcast live on Canada West TV.
The women's squad earned a third consecutive shutout when they beat the Thunderbirds 2-0 in their Friday, Oct. 11 matchup. Even though that streak ended on Saturday, Oct. 12, the Cougars mustered up a 4-3 victory to remain undefeated on the season.
Aliya Jomha earned Players Bench Athlete of the Week honours after contributing two goals and two assists in the Cougars' first road weekend of the season.
Their next game will see the MRU Cougars face the University of Calgary Dinos on Friday, Oct. 18 at Father David Bauer Arena and on Saturday, Oct. 19 at Flames Community Arena. Both Crowchild Classic games start at 7 P.M. and will also be broadcast live on Canada West TV.
