MBB: Impressive offence from MRU not enough to beat the Dinos

Box Score
CALGARY, AB – Crowchild is red and gold.

The University of Calgary Dinos men's basketball team took home their second win in as many nights with a 119-103 victory over the Mount Royal University Cougars at Kenyon Court.

Sporting their throwback gold uniforms, the Dinos made it rain from three-point range, going 18-for-33 from beyond the arc.

Noah Wharton started hot for Calgary as the visiting Dinos scored 37 points in the first quarter to lead by 10. The floor general from Brampton, Ont., filled the scoresheet, putting up 23 points, eight rebounds and six assists in 35 minutes of play.

Mount Royal kept pace with the Dinos and headed to the locker room at the half down by just nine. Forward Daniel Owoeye stood out with his impressive play in the first half, showcasing his versatility all over the court.

Despite scoring 61 points in the first half, the Dinos only shot two free throws, much to the dismay of the Calgary coaching staff.

The point of difference for the University of Calgary was a superb performance from Martynas Sabaliauskas. The Lithuanian forward exploded for a season-high 36 points, going an incredible 8-for-11 from three. Along with his offensive outburst, Sabaliauskas grabbed a team-best 10 rebounds.

Mount Royal proved to be no slouch on offence either. Fresh off securing his spot as the all-time leading scorer in Cougars history, Holt Tomie posted another spectacular performance. The Calgary local scored 31 points while also grabbing 10 boards. Tomie continued to find holes in the Dinos' defence while penetrating the basket as well as pulling up from deep to keep his opponents honest.

Keivonte Watts continued to be a problem for the Dinos as he scored 28 points including four makes from behind the three-point line.

However, Tomie and Watts' efforts would not be enough to beat the fire-power-filled lineup of the University of Calgary Dinos. Wharton, Sabaliauskas and the rest of the boys in gold secured the victory to sweep the MRU Cougars in the Crowchild Classic.

The 5-7 Cougars will regroup as they head into their bye week before heading east for a date with the University of Regina Cougars on January 19.
