CALGARY, AB – Revenge is best served on a sheet of ice.
The University of Calgary Dinos women's hockey team shutout the Mount Royal University Cougars 2-0 at the Scotiabank Saddledome, avenging their loss in last year's Crowchild Classic
The first period saw 20 minutes of low-event hockey.
The Dinos had the best chance in the frame but Cougars netminder
Kaitlyn Ross made a miraculous glove save to keep the game scoreless.Â
Across the ice, Dinos goaltender Gabrielle Durante would tame the Cougars' offence, playing exceptional positionally.Â
Mount Royal got a boost of confidence after successfully killing off two penalties that saw them with only three skaters for almost two minutes.Â
Though a fair amount of pressure was exchanged by both sides, the two Cowtown teams went into the intermission scoreless.
In the second period, neither side could find twine.
Sydney Benko had the period's best chance with a breakaway opportunity but was robbed by the glove of Durante.
Moments later with the Dinos on the power play, Caitlyn Perlinger had a rip from distance that
seemed destined for the back of the net, only to see the puck poked away by a defender's stick
at the last second.
After a deadlock that stretched into the third, the Dinos finally sounded the Saddledome horn. Former MRU Cougar
Courtney Kollman scored 7:13 into the final period to give Calgary a 1-0 lead.Â
"It's always pretty special to play against your old team," said
Courtney Kollman following the game. "It's great to get the win for the Dinos."
Elizabeth Lang iced the game with an empty netter to wrap up a memorable Crowchild Classic event.
"I thought we were a little flat today," commented Mount Royal head coach
Scott Rivett. "We need to play with more energy and pace."
The loss snaps the Cougars' five-game winning streak and moves them to 18-5-0 in the 2023-24 Canada West season while the Dinos improve to 10-13-2.
The rivals will face off again on Friday at 7 p.m. from Flames Community Arenas. Tickets can be
purchased online and the game can be streamed live on
Canada West TV.
