Box Score The Mount Royal University men's hockey team displayed dominance during their home opener against the University of Regina, securing a 5 – 1 victory.
The first period saw both teams battling for control of the game.
Roughly nine minutes in, Mount Royal's
Robbie Holmes was penalized for a hooking call, putting the team under pressure by giving Regina the power play.
With an assist from
Spencer Moe, Mount Royal's captain
Connor Blake secured a 1 – 0 lead late into the first period.
Heading into the final minutes, Regina's Kade Runke tied the game 1 – 1, with both teams scrambling in front of the net.
Despite MRU being down a player due to a power play in the first minute, they displayed dominance on the ice.
Mount Royal's
Spencer Moe gave them in a 2-1 lead against their opponents within the first three minutes of the period. MRU received another penalty later with
Jaxon Martens sitting in the penalty box for boarding.
Midway through the second,
Spencer Moe had a breakaway goal, extending the MRU Cougars to a 3 – 1 lead.
Putting pressure on Regina, MRU scored an additional goal by
Clayton Hanus with an assist from
Spencer Moe in front of the net. The period finished with a power play against Regina's Randen Schmidt for holding.
The third period started off with a penalty against Mount Royal's
Kyle Walker for tripping. Halfway through the third, Mount Royal's
Tristan Zandee was sent to the box for slashing.
MRU scored a late goal into the third by
Clayton Hanus, assisted by
Blake Stevenson, extending their lead 5 – 1.
Player of the game,
Spencer Moe, said the team is feeling good following their win and moving forward with a young team. He said it was positive seeing the fans come out for their home opener.
"I feel like this league doesn't get as much recognition as it should," he said. "It's nice to see a lot of people filling up the stands."
Mount Royal takes on the University of Regina again on Sept. 30 at 5 p.m. Tickets are available
